I was wondering if anyone knows how to check the sending unit to see if it is good or bad. I know that when i started taking the car apart the gas gauge did not read right and now that i have it disassembled i need to check the sending unit, i also have an '83 parts car and would like to check that one as well hopefully one of them will be good. can check these with a ohm meter?

resistance, empty 0... full 90 ohms... better remove sending unit first

It's easier to check out the gage to find out if that's the problem. With a couple of resistors, one around 45 ohms and one around 90 ohms you can bench test the gage.

I'm not really too worried about whether the gauge is good or not, i'm planning on getting some autometer gauges, wouldn't matter too much now anyway since the interior is gutted, my main concern is right now i'm completey cleaning up the underside and have the gas tank out of the elky and i want to make sure the sending unit is good or not before i put the tank back in so later on i don't have to drop it again. i also have an '83 parts car that i could check that one too.

rinssis:will this work? using and ohm meter to test the resistance? i hope so since i'm SOL on using the gauge to tell me whether is bad or not.

Thanks guys i appreciate the help

Yes an ohm meter will work. When you order an Autometer gauge for the car you have to order it to match the OE sender if you plan on using it. Stock empty = 0 ohms, full = 90 ohms. If you have the sender removed from the tank if you slowly lift it up the ohm meter should smoothly go from 0 - 90. If it does then the sender is ok.
