I've got an 81 elk SS clone with a 3speed auto in the floor. I was thinking instead of rebuilding a console from scratch, maybe just putting a boot on the shifter (B&M Zgate) and then installing 60/40 bench seats to give the Camino a manual appearance but leaving it automatic. I've heard that trying to cross over from auto to manual is a real pain and costs a lot of money, so I figure do the next best thing. Or do you think it would be better to rebuild a console and leaving the shifter the way it was?

If I do rebuild the console, anyone got any tips how? Or anyone know of any cars that have a console that might go well with an elk of my year? I thought just to buld a frame out of wood or pvc pipe, then surround it with like cardboard or really thin wooden panels. Then maybe cover the sides with a vinyl and polish the wood on the top. But I don't know if an idea like that would work. Please help. Thanks

Hey Ray

Custom Classics makes a Year correct console for the Elky. http://www.honestcharley.com/ec%20interior.htm

I would build a console out of luan (3/32" plywood from your home center) then cover it with carpet that matches.

you see
when ur poor and white trash, u need to make things, now i happen to be the guy to respond to this, so from reading this post. i would get a coat hanger and bend it as straight as u can, or go buy some flexable wire. bend the wire to a frame, and lay fiberglass over it. i made a frame outa fiberglass once and covered it. looked great. the part i didnt cover. i sanded with 40 till it was somewhat smooth and put some bondo on it. looked pretty good and its more liught weight then wood and more flexable but strong. if u want to put it to the test u can do ur old ladie over it and if it holds up, ur a piscaco
