Hello all,
I recently bought some used bucket seats out of a '94 Sunfire at a junkyard. They are in really good shape and I am wondering how big of a job it is going to be to swap these in. My '78 El Camino has a bench seat right now and only two fasteners per side. Should I keep these buckets or look for something else. Any information on getting these attached safely would be greatly appreciated.

I added a split bench in place of the solid bench. You'll need to fab up some mounts and weld them to your floor where the bucket seat is going to sit. Build your new mount, bolt it to the seat, set the seat in place where you want it and weld it to the floor. Heres some pics of what I did for mine.

I just changed from bench to buckets and did no welding at all. I found some tracks from a G-body Grand Prix and just bolted them in. Worked great!

Dis the same myself, bolted in a set of power leather buckets from a 97 firebird. You can see in my gallery. Buckets are so much better for me.

i have seats from a 96 sunfire and they went in easy, but my elky had a split bench in it so i had the brackets to use with the seats. you might have to, as someone else had said, weld new mounts, it won't be that hard. if you have someone do it they should just meassure carefully. you will be happy, they fit really good, right height and width.

So are the fastening points already there even though it's a bench seat? I guess what I am asking is whether or not the mounting points for buckets were installed in every El Camino whether or not the vehicle came with buckets or not. Is it just a matter of removing the bench and all the mounting points will be there? I have access to a Grand Prix and I belive that it had its seats still in it at a local junkyard. Thanks again.

if your bench seat was a one-piece bench, your car will not have the bucket seat mounts on each side of the trans hump.

You'll need to beg barrow or steel a set of Buckt tracks, if those seats didn't already come with them. See if the outside tracks will mount first. If they do and are workable, then measure where the other side will go and you can have someone weld a mount to the floor pan or build something that will hold and make the seat level and safe. You could do that by just putting a bumper bolt through the floor pan from the bottom, I did that to my 76 but I also used a piece of plate to go through under the floor pan so that I wasn't just putting a hole in the flimsy floor pans and bolting to that.

So there are lots of ways to do that. Good Luck and I hope that your's is an easy mod. :D

i had to use the brackets that came from my elky. the sunfire seat's ones don't line up to the outside mounting points

i just changed over from bench to buckets, i drilled holes where track meets floor boards on inside, then spaced up with washers on front and back of seat track holes, then i cut out block of steel to proper height drilled holes and bloted seat track to spacer through floorboard.
