I found an 80's camaro parts car in the local classifieds for cheap, i am intrested in taking the 5spd and putting it behind the 350 in me 86, i have heard that these trannys arnt very strong thats why they were behind the 305's, i am hoping to make about 400hp at the crank, will it handle it? I have a 200r4 in need of a rebuild now so i figure why not swap?

Don't bother with the t-5 AND high horsepower... You'll get stuck on the side of the road calling a tow truck.. lol
T-5's are very weak.. nice for the mild mannered foot with a no HP motor.. heheh
I've broken T-5's, tried TKO's (and hated them) and have finally fell in love with the T56.. They work very well, are strong (450 ft lbs) and you don't have to grind to find reverse (syncronized) Easy to shift!
Good luck

If you've already got a 200-4R in need of a rebuild and were even considering the cost and labor of a manual swap, why not just have the 200 built up with all the good parts? I think, with a well-built 200-4R, you will enjoy your car much better than with a th350. The 200 will also allow you to go down the highway with more comfort than the th350.
If you dont have anyone local to build the 200 (some will insist that it is an inferior tranny) for you, you can order one from bowtieoverdrives. I got their Level 2 200-4R (can handle 450-500lb-ft) with a 2200 stall converter, TV MadeEZ, and installation kit shipped for less than $1500. I got a deal on shipping at the time, so your cost might be around $1600-17000 (still worth it IMO).

OUCH* Bowtieoverdrives - That's a sore spot! I've been there done that with a 700r4.... crappiest trans I've ever had.. nothing but problems from day one! Never did shift right.. The tech support was stupid and warranty left me with a non-functioning trans after a year! I still have the case out in the yard somewhere if anyone wants it! Lost $3000 + on this crap! :x
After all the bs I've gone thru I have come to HATE an automatic anymore (Everything I've got is a 6 speed now) but if I had to go with the auto for some reason I'd get one from http://www.transmissioncenter.net/StockTransShip.htm
I've dealt with them in the past and got great parts and service...

My BTO 200-4R works flawlessly and the customer service I've recieved from them was fabulous. Win some and lose some I guess. You're only the second person I've found that doesnt like BTO.
