As some of you may know I recently bought a new elky from the original owner. The major problem I have with the guages is that the tach doesn't work When you turn the key to accessory and just before the engine turns over the tach will read 500 to 1000 rpm and stay solid. When the engine starts the tach sits dead on 0 rpm. Any clues?

I'm getting into that tomorrow and hope that it really simple but thought I'd ask here first so I'd have a starting point other than making sure connections are solid.

It's probably a bad tachometer filter. Try jumpering it out and see if the tachometer works. Also check the connection at the distributor cap.

From what I've read from other people; I assume I can't go get a new tach filter from autozone can I?

It may also be a poor connection at the back of the guage cluster, either the wiring connector to the flex circuit board, or the back of the tach to the securing posts, as it uses those to transfer the signal, in mine the fuel posts were really loose and wouldn't register more than a 1/4 tank when full, tightened those down, and all was better for that guage at least.

They are not available anymore. But as I stated, you don't need it for the tachometer to work.
