I would look for a 1970-1974 passenger engine.

I'd stay away from the truck blocks. They had a taller deck height.

Only the medium duty trucks had tall deck blocks, the pick-up trucks used regular passenger car engines.

My bad. I was thinking of the 366, 396 and 427 truck engines.

Post some details as you do the swap - I am putting a 572 into my '79. It is a tall deck but that's the least problem - the top of the air cleaner will be 6" above the hoodline. Oh well - 650HP will be worth it. I am putting in a TCI TH400 and a crossmembers.com crossmember with frame extension for true dual exhaust and proper fit for the beefed up trans. I hope to have the thing in and started by the 4th of July. Some in progress pictures are here (my gallery):

I would love to hear of problems and solutions as you progress...

alas, my dad said a 454 would be "too much motor" i of course told him thats insane as there is no such thing, so i am going to have to make the power outta my sb, a 74 L48 350. Good luck with your swap though, looks great !!

Three things you can't possibly have too much of:
SEX
HORSEPOWER
MONEY

I disagree. Its possible to have too much HP. If you just sit there spinning your wheels, it wont matter how much power you have.
Back on topic, good luck with the big block search. When you get started, post up some pictures of the removal/install process.

Nope---too much hp is not possible---too little traction is...............Dan

Exactly!

You don't build a 500 horse motor and use a 200 horse drivetrain.

Comments about driving a big horsepower motor in the rain are bogus too. Anything can be driven in the rain with proper throttle control.

Step up the power... step up everything else accordingly.

HAHA, i'm goning to have to side with txbusa, old_coot, and Mrapii on this one, but you guys didnt factor in driver error, there is such thing as too much power for a young and/or inexpeirenced driver, not talking about me, i'm sure if my sister,16, was given a big block elky it would be in a ditch before the end of the day. That is why she drives a 91 Civic, no power. But that same elky would be perfect in the hands of any of you guys because you know throttle controll and proper braking technique.

I would like to add a little somthing i just learned. My sister i mentioned has a freind named jessica, she's the total sterotypical cheerleader type all the way, dumb blonde, ect. Anyways, her daddy bought her a an 02 Camaro Z28 and put flowmasters and a body kit on it for her, this is all when she is only 15 and wont get her license for a year. Anyways, she went to take the driving portion of her license exam and failed. I am at a loss to see how she failed because in North Carolina the driving portion is baisicly getting it out of the DMV parking lot and doing a 3pt turn. She is going back next week to try again. I am at a loss to see why her parents are going to put her behind the wheel of one of the more powerful vehicles avalible today. She always brags about how fast her z28 automatic is, rippin on the camino, i humbly point out that my car has nothing between the front fenders and that as soon as it does were takin to the local strip and runnin em, i'm shootin for 12s

An automatic Z28? I thought they only offered Z28's in manuals. Maybe that was only between a certain time. Why would you even want a Z28 with an auto anyway?
Also, when she wrecks the car (and she will), Ive got dibs on the motor.

too late, i already called it, and i thought the same thing about z28s but i was cruising the forums on ls1.com and you can get the A4 automatic with them apparently, i also learned that if you happen to race an automatic z28 go from 30 because thats there in between speed, it wont downshift but its low in the powerband :)
