Build sheet on my 1986 El Camino says itis a 308, performance axel, limited slip.
Is there a history to this set up? Is it know to be good or #@%?
It is attached to a 305 and an automatic.

Thanks

If it still works, use it.. I don't believe the posi part is rebuildable, to the best of my knowledge. 7.5" or 7.625" ring gear isn't desireable in the performance world but behind a 305 you'll be just fine.. If you goto a 350 etc.. later you may want to consider upgrading to a beefier rear axle.. I ended up using a 72' A-body 8.2 rear and haven't had a problem with 430hp.. In 7 years of driving like I stole it! Although, I have broken 3 of the stock 7.5's!

Be on the look out for a 8.5 10 bolt from a Buick GNX (Grand National) or the 80's Olds 442's! Hard to find.. also hard to break.. and they are a direct bolt in since they are from the g-body platform...

Bottom line.. If you leave the motor stock and don't drive the car like your runnin' from law, you'll be fine

are just fine...I ran them behind a 283sbc in an old 53 PU truck and they were just fine around town and on the road!!
