My Elky has a leak at the window seals and lots of wind noise so I bought new weatherstripping. I'm not sure how to replace them, does anyone know the sequence?

i had to do this...all i did was remove the old weatherstripping from the window, try and pull as much out as you can itll be easier on you in the long run. after you get all the big chunks out, youll have to pick at whats left in there, try and get as much out as you can! Youll need some Adhesive weatherstipping stuff from Wal Mart or Autozone, somewhere like that. I think its called Weatherstripping adhesive, the color of the adhesive is black. Ill get back to you on the name of it. That's basically it, hope that made sense. If you have any questions, ask away.

Well, I was about to post up the same question, but I see someone beat me to it. I'm planning on replacing the door and window rubbers on both sides this weekend. I've never done it before, so if anyone has any tips or tricks they would like to share, that would be great. I've already got the black weatherstripping adhesive. Will warmer temperatures make the operation easier or harder? I'm sure the weatherstripping will be more pliable, but will heat effect the adhesive in any negative way? On removing the old, if I have any stubborn spots, I'll just put my heat gun on a low setting and hit it with that. That should get the adhesive to break loose.

BTW, WylieD, your Elky is super clean. Is that limo tint on your windows?

Well I did the driver's side yesterday. WHAT A JOB! Not difficult, just a PIA! The big deal was removing all the little bits of old rubber that were glued into the channels. I found two things helped, one was a wire brush (small like a toothbrush) and the other was a bent nail I fashioned to get into the grooves. I'm sure some special tool exists to do this which might make it less frustrating.

Once it was all out putting in the new one was fairly simple, just took a little patience and it fit right in.

I can tell you this, before I put the passenger side in I'm going to call the local body shop and if they tell me they will charge me $50 to do the installation I'LL PAY IT! It's one of those jobs that now that I've done it I'll gladly pay someone else a reasonable fee to do it.

Leo, glad you got one side completed. I'm going to go for it and do it myself, although like you, I may never want to do it again! If I have a lot of pieces that stick, I'll try my heat gun. It has variable settings that will do anything from remove bumper stickers gently to boil off paint. I'm hoping this will help and get everything nice and soft so that it will come off in the least amount of pieces as possible. Did you have any problems with the adhesive?

yeah its just all the little pieces still left in it that makes it difficult.
i was gonna call the body shop but never got around to it, so i went ahead and did them both myslef.

I did the weatherstrips and door felts on my '68...cleaned/scraped every little flake of old stripping/glue off the doors with a mini-flat screwdriver (carb cleaner/solvent and a cotton rag helped), I "jammed" my doors in white, then scraped the paint back off of the area where the strips install on the door. I just went down to Home Depot and bought some caulking gun type "death grip" adhesive (not Liquid Nail) and used that to install the "soff seal" brand strips. I used the mini-flat screwdriver to help tuck in the strips around the window area of the door (where there were no plastic nubs)... Turned out great...adhesive worked great, looks good, and NO air leaks!

Did the window felts and door seals this weekend. Went well, except for the fact that the Soff Seal door seals that I got from OPG were not exactly a perfect fit on the ends. Also, the plastic pins that hold the stripping do not fit well, so I reused the factory ones which worked perfectly. Overall, a project that was time consuming, but not too difficult. I started on the drivers side window rubber and let me tell you, the removal process is definitely a PITA. I used my heat gun on a medium setting to soften the adhesive and used a flat head screw driver to scrape the remains off. Thats as far as I got last nite, but I need to finish it and the passenger side too by this coming weekend because I have new carpet coming.

Just wait 12 months when both of the top corners of the window seal come unglued and it looks like Ka-Ka. Soffseal sux. I made the mistake of putting it in my 79. I was fortunate enough to find NOS GM window weatherstripping for my 87 restoration. Expensive, but well worth it.

Well, I hope that doesn't happen, but if it does.....lesson learned. At least I keep my Elky garaged, and it's almost never in the rain, unless I get caught out on the road by accident. The Soff Seal products are part of a larger order I got from OPGI, a company who I think less of every time I get something from them. I'll probably avoid them all together in the future. They have the selection, or so they say (they usually backorder for months), and the quality of the parts is less than desirable. I think it's time us in the car hobby stand up to these vendors and refuse to accept shoddy quality. Oops, that was a tangent (Gets down off soapbox) Ahem....anyway, I hope I get at least a few years out of my weatherstripping. It just has to last until I repaint it, which will probably be a year or two out.

I need to replace mine. I looked on ebay and there is several. My car is in the paint shop now and they called today and are removing the windows to get it ready for paint. I am going to have to get some before they put it back together. Can anyone recommend a remanufacure or are they all about the same. I dont think I will get lucky enough to find nos parts on a short notice. John

After 1 day I had a corner peel off. Now I can't get any of the corners to stay up. My power windows really messed it up. That's why I use camo colored duct-tape on my weatherstripping.
