I recently started building a 700R4 for use behind a 383. The teardown went fairly well, and I found a few problems with the core tranny (dead 3-4 clutches, low/reverse input drum burnt outside, scored on front and chewed on the inside, and badly worn band), and I think I located the cause (low fluid - input seal replaced, but nothing else). I'll be checking out each part as I go, and replacing anything that doesn't look right.

I find that there are a few places where I need some help, in the form of special tools or parts. Currently, I need the gear for the electronic speedo removed, and a mechanical speedo drive system put in. This appears to require a press. I also need to clean up the case, hopefully without washing the sludge into the sewer/stream/ocean.

Can anyone in the area suggest a shop that will help with this sort of thing?

Currently, I need the gear for the electronic speedo removed, and a mechanical speedo drive system put in. This appears to require a press. No press needed. Someone suggested that I should be able to take this gear off with a hammer, if I'm careful. I pulled out my brass hammer, and five minutes later the speedo gear was off. I was lucky, in that the output shaft has the holes in it for the clip. This should allow the new gear to go on without a problem.I also need to clean up the case, hopefully without washing the sludge into the sewer/stream/ocean.This is causing more of a problem. The shops around here are thieves. They want $75 to clean the case.

I think I'll try to scrape some of the big chunks off, and see what it looks like. If it gets clean enough, I should be able to use an engine cleaner on it, and not see an oil slick running off of it.
