: Head turner
Wheezer 06-22-2005, 10:22 PM I don't normally toot my own horn but i have noticed that since buying my Elky last fall,no other vehicle i have ever owned has generated as many friendly waves, questions and second looks as this one.I've had a few nice lifted 4x4's,a couple old Chevelles and even a blown rat powered Vette and none got the looks my Elky gets. You'll have to excuse my ranting but i'm just not used to this kind of attention.Sometimes a quick jaunt to the gas station ends up taking a couple of hours. My wife has had a fit at me twice now after i told her i was just running real quick to fill er up only to return 2 hours later.I don't consider my car anything special to the everyday person(even though it's special to me)there are a lot nicer cars out there.Do any of you have similar problems? It seems almost everybody i run across likes El Caminos, save for the few of the elite people with Mercedes or Porsches who turn up thier noses at a stoplight.
Supercharged 86 06-22-2005, 10:34 PM I think it's all about the wheels! We'll see if it helps me.
There isn't anything much more intersting than an El Camino. Although it was a weird idea that led to the design, GM pulled it off pretty well. It's certainly my favorite of the G-bodies and even when compared to the Chevelles. You gotta love an El Camino!
Maddening 06-22-2005, 10:37 PM Definitely a headturner here too, and my car's sorta beat. Also really rare around here, hardly any on the road anymore.
Wheezer 06-22-2005, 10:44 PM So John you're saying if not for the TT2's nobody would look.Just giving ya a hard time man. :P When do we get to see some pics of that beast with all your new goodies?
happens all the time with my 59....and I love it
70ElkySS 06-23-2005, 05:13 AM Same here. I also have a '71 big block Corvette, but it generates nowhere near the attention of the Camino.

Yup, it's all in the wheels
Hopefully my power steering lines will be in tomorrow. If they actually fit, I want to get some pictures and video and bring it to a local cruise night once it's sorted out and shiny again
GoGoPWR 06-23-2005, 09:09 AM No wonder you turn heads, thats a beautifull elky, super clean, and thats without even seeing what you have under the hood.
72blkwdw 06-23-2005, 09:27 AM Same thing happened when I owned my 81. People would wave and stare all the time, especially the bikers. It was awsome to have that kind of attention every once in a while!
Elky 83 06-23-2005, 10:16 AM I get the same thing all the time. I've never had a car or truck that commands attention like my 83 Elky. So I guess I'll keep it for awhaile.

Wheezer 06-23-2005, 12:41 PM Thanks for the compliment GoGoPWR. 8)
70ELCO 06-23-2005, 12:48 PM You just never know where the next thumbs up is going to come from. Have to tell you my last two...
At the light and I hear a small sound of the horn of the car that had pulled up next to me. I see a woman asking me to open my side window. I see she has a car full of kids all with big smiles on their faces. I have to lean over to ROLL down my window.
The lady says, "Hey look kids he has to ROLL that window down!" 8O I laugh and say, "Yes the power in these cars are not in the windows!" :P
Then says her son (I'm guessing about eight) loves my car! They are all smiles and waves. I say thank you! I smile to myself driving off and almost feel like a movie star!
2nd...
I'm in the middle lane of the freeway. A beautiful new white AMG coupe pulls up along side of me and is just sitting there. Not passing. You know the feeling when you just know they are checking out your ride. I glance over and see a 50's age couple. I can see the lady talking to the driver looking at my car. I'm sure she is asking her husband what the hell is that thing? She then looks right at me and gives me a big thumbs up and smile! Wow I thought to myself....AMG owner gives a thumbs up and smile to a Chevy! Cool!
rmckin 06-23-2005, 02:02 PM It's been my experience that the Younger Kids are the most interested in my Elky. At a gas station recently, a Young Guy attending the pumps questioned me extensively about my Elky. Then, He rattled off a bunch of facts about it that I didn't even know. Turns out, He owns an '81.
A Young Girl in town has a Dodge Stealth, and every time I see Her, She tries to pick a race. Guess She thinks my car is a worthy competitor.
At work, all the Young Guys talk about my Elky.
Pretty Cool ......... 8-)
ElkySS 06-23-2005, 04:56 PM I've owned over a hundred vehicles and the only three that have generated the same interest as my Choo Choo Elky is a '57 T-bird, a '63 "split window" Corvette coupe and my Corvette Z06. Pretty heady company for our El Caminos don't you think?
Also, I've noticed over the last five years that El Camino interest is increasing! Makes you want to grin every time you drive down the street.
RATCAMINO 06-23-2005, 06:07 PM hmmm, people just seem to glare at me when i go by
n00206 06-23-2005, 06:57 PM Last weekend I was driving home. It was late. I stopped at a light. There was a party going at the house across the street. I could tell by all the cars parked in the yard.
A man an woman were standing on the porch. The woman pointed at my car. Then she went inside. A few seconds later, eight people came out on the porch. They were all pionting at my car and talking to each other. Maybe they were admiring, maybe they were laughing. Either way, it got noticed.
I like my cruck. But, compared to the other rides I've seen in the gallery, its a hunk of poo (dang censor filter). Even so, it gets a few looks. That's the thing about El Caminos.
ElkySS 06-24-2005, 07:10 AM There are some old threads on this subject, but the El Camino is a bit like political parties, people seem to either love one or hate one...very little middle ground in feelings toward El Caminos.
Bowtie 06-24-2005, 07:14 AM Dan,
Political parties huh?
I guess that means there are those who agree with you and those who are wrong.
Take care.
ElkySS 06-24-2005, 07:31 AM Greg,
Very few people are wrong, but there are a lot who are less correct than I...
Lost El Camino 06-24-2005, 12:59 PM Haven't owned an el camino in many years. I still have people say to me "your that guy that drove the el camino". Happened to me this week. Amazing the memory people have for certain things. Just goes to prove the staying power of these automobiles. My fascination with the el camino is not over. I plan to join you all as an owner 'again' soon. Finishing up on a project now. Try to keep the rubber on the rear tires. Enjoy.
