I have a set of aluminum wheels off a z28 and have seen them polished. does anyone know how to do this? I've heard sanding from a 320 grit up to 2000 and then a buffer? can i use a dremmel tool with a little buffer attachment? i'm really curious about this .... help

I got this info from a guy who sells awesome wheels on eBay... he gets them from junk-yards etc...
"Hi,Istarted with paint remover,then 100grit,then 220, 400,600, 1000 grit,then
machine buffed w/ brownand then white rouge buffing compound. Afterwards use
mothers. Hope this helps. Gary"
I used Aircraft polish remover (forget the real name, but close) to get rid of the clearcoat first and mine were unpainted, but haven't got to the polishing yet :(
and here's what they look like when he's done

A dremmel tool would take years.

I have a set of 32 year old ET aluminum mags. I use a product called "Simichrome" first. This gets them very clean and shines well. I got my Simichrome at a local Harley dealership. I then do a follow up with English Custom polish (http://www.englishcustompolishing.com/usca/hotchrome.html) and they look real nice for the final top coat.
You can use a product by Mothers called Mothers powerball (http://www.motherspowerball.com/) to apply if you like.
I've also heard, but not tried, as another top coating Poorboys wheel sealant (http://www.poorboysworld.com/wheel-sealant.htm)

I picked up some Poorboys wheel sealant (http://www.poorboysworld.com/wheel-sealant.htm) to try. My wheels were pretty clean from the Simichrome and English Custom Polish, but I cleaned them again. Then applied two coats of the Poorboys Wheel Sealant. I think they look a little better, but the real test will be how long they stay clean. That IS supposed to be what the Wheel Sealant is for. I'll let you know how long they stay clean. I'm hoping this does as good a job as Zoop Seal does, but a whole lot less expensive.
Has anybody else used Poorboys wheel sealant?

never dull in the silver can that stuff works really good it takes about an hour a wheel but its worth it then when you finish that get some turtle wax polish and polish your wheels with it and it will keep them clean just look at my wheels

Looks very good Steve. I've never tried the Never Dull. If this Poorboys wheel sealant doesn't work out, I'll give that a try.

I have a humble respect for youse guys who put those wonderful shines on aluminum wheels. You are the purists of our hobby. :)
As for me, I am just lazy country boy. My perfect cure is called CHROME!
May the force be with all of you.
Take care.
