Has anyone tried "5 Star Shine" on their cars or trucks? It was recommended in a car column in today's paper. It evidently contains a product that will not let anything stick to your car and protects the car for 3-5 years. When claims are made like this I tend to be skeptical. Anyone familiar with this product? Bonnie

And rightfully so. This is a scam just like the Tornado and fuel magnets! There is no product on the market that will protect your car for 6 months, let alone 5 yrs. This is the same scam that new car dealers try to sell buyers, they try to convince you to buy their $500 paint protection coating. It is pure hoqwash, the product cost them maybe $10 and does nothing.
What these guys and the dealers count on is that you will never come back to them with a claim that your paint faded 5 yrs later. Most people never notice anyway.
The best and only way to protect your paint is to properly prep the surface and polish it every two or three months on the average. This will help with paint fade and things sticking such as bird poop, sap, and dead bugs. Those items will still stick but will be less prone to do damage.
You coulds also use a good spray detailer to touch up the car occasionally, and if you can, avoid car washes, they scratch the dickens out of the car.
