: Concerning insurance
1200Sportster 07-05-2005, 07:43 PM I causally asked my auto insurer what would happen if my '85 Camino was really damaged by some fool who had no insurance. Guess what? I would get book value, about $46.57. I almost had a cow. I now am searching for a reliable ins. co. who offers replacement ins. I have a few names and #'s but was wondering if anyone else can steer me in a direction other than American Collectors Ins. Co. ? Thanks in advance, 1200 sportster
txbusa 07-05-2005, 07:49 PM I use Grundy insurance.
www.grundy.com
Car is covered for $18K value and it is about $200.00 per year for FULL coverage. No mileage restrictions either.

dughrt 07-05-2005, 08:20 PM Did you talk to your agent about a collecter car polcy? Alot of the major companies now offer something like that to there costomers. I have mine threw American Family. $180 a year for $15,000 worth of coverage. No milage ristrictions.
Most places will ask you to get an apprasel to show a value for your car.
1200Sportster 07-05-2005, 08:23 PM Thanks for the info, John. I was told I could go about 2000 miles from Am. Co. and they would cover me with medical and comp & coll. for $300 a year. The milage seems ok until I thought I'd drive from here in Colorado to Chicago and back. That would use up everything(milage) just for one Chicago hot dog.
1200Sportster 07-05-2005, 08:29 PM Thanks ,Douglas. I talked to my State Farm agent and asked. They called some company headdime(quarters) and said --no. I have my '92 LT1 Vette with them and a Blazer and a Yukon, along with my house and other things. I'm beginnig to get po'd and I'm going to start dishing out some of me insurance with other companies. Thanks again for the info.
Wheezer 07-05-2005, 09:02 PM I have my '82 insured through State Farm.I had it appraised by the owner of my local Chevy dealer, got it in writing, then the insurance agent came out to my house and took a few photos of the Elky, collected my apprasel paperwork and it was insured for the apprasel amount.
1200Sportster 07-06-2005, 06:28 AM Thanks,Wheezer, I might give that a try. I've found out that some insurers only let you drive to and from a car show and that it can't be used for long drives just to see friends and family. That disappointed me. Now I guess I'll go back to the State Farm people and see about an appraisal myself.
XbeasleyX 07-06-2005, 09:46 AM Grundy and the like will only insure 25 year olds and older and you can not let someone younger drive it. :? So I have to deal with lower than needed coverage for about 7 more years.
rushgator 07-06-2005, 02:05 PM Grundy, Hagerty, and the like, as said before, will only do 25 yrs or older. Also, they cannot be used for anything but pleasure driving- no trips to work. The car must be kept in a locked garage. At least with Hagerty, there are no mileage restrictions. Also, there must be a primary vehicle for every licensed driver in the household. So, yes you can insure for appraised value, but your use will be limited one way or another.
1200Sportster 07-06-2005, 02:39 PM Thaks XbeasleyX and Rushgator. I also found out from Grundy that you can not, I really mean can not drive the vehicle for long pleasure drives. They have unlimited milage if and onoly if you drive to a show for cars and have the documentation that you were registered and if anything happens, you better have that paper work. Now it seems as if I'm back to square one. I'll contact the nitwits I dealt with before with my hat in hand begging to let them let me get ins. form them. Oh, well.

I don't know if you have Shelter Insurance Co. in your state or not. I live in Missouri and like you, just asked my agent about insurance for my 82 Elky the other day. I had always just insured it with liability and comp. but no collision because I was sure they wouldn't pay anywhere near what the car is worth on a regular type policy.
I drive my Elky every day to work but keep it in excellent condition so a collector type policy wouldn't work for me.
I found out Shelter has a stated value policy available for daily drivers like mine and the cost was only a very small amount over what I was paying without any collision at all!
I insured mine for $6000.00 coverage and can still drive it to work every day.
A stated value policy isn't as good as an agreed value policy, but that type can only be had for collector cars.
With the stated value policy, they will pay for damage up to that amount if its totaled or find a like kind and quality replacement for the car.
No apprasel was needed, they only had to take a couple of photos of it.
This type of policy is just what I needed.
1200Sportster 07-06-2005, 07:07 PM Thanks Trix I'll try to see if they are available here. it sounds like what I want.
80elcamino 07-17-2005, 08:27 PM I found when my gold elky was totaled by a 50 MPH head-on that we're all screwed if the elky is a daily driver. I was able to get about 5K for mine. But that was with a month old complete interior [which I must mention is for sale] and a 402 BBC. The car was a complete custom....It kills me to this day to think they can do this to us.
Good luck finding that insurance.
oldelky80 07-18-2005, 06:33 AM If you happen to live in Canada the best option is Lant Insurance with their Silver Wheel(original cars) or Custom Wheel plan.Lant Insurance (http://www.lant-ins.ca) Yes you will need an appraisal but it only needs to be updated every 5 years. I've been with them since they started about 20 years ago and you can't beat their rates or service.
Bloodline 07-18-2005, 07:41 AM I have the Custom Wheel plan. What are your kilometer resrictions? What other restrictions do you have?
oldelky80 07-18-2005, 10:30 AM I just renewed my policy and I didn't see any mileage restrictions.
Bloodline 07-18-2005, 11:20 AM Interesting. I am going to have another look at my plan. Might not be thru the same company.
