i am going to pick up my '64 elky hopefully this saturday and it has a like a 228 or something like that right now but i am going to get a 350 in it, but i want to know a good place to buy engine parts, headers, intake, etc..., also if there are any other places that one should know about when fixing up an elky. any help would be greatly appreciated.
Tell us specifically what you're looking for and how much you want to spend...sometimes it's easier to just buy a crate motor if you not quite sure what individual components to buy.

Goodwrench PP sells a 383 but you have to look under truck engines that is how they market it as a truck engine. It is pretty nice it has roller lifters and all that. Out of the Box it is not a super show stopper but with a good cam and raising the compression a little it can be a solid producer. The ZZ crate motors are good solid performers also then there is that limited edition 454 Ram Jet and they only want a measely $21,000.00 and change (I'm not kidding!) for that puppy and the ZZ502 Ram Jet produces more HP than the limited edition 454 does.
Want to save yourself some Woes, get a crate motor from GM PP. They will even sell you an 6.0 L LS1 (Z06 version) with a sound 405 Hp out of the box. It has something like 10.3:1 compression and all nice performance parts and I even read somewhere that those (Z06) had "6 Bolt Mains". I've never even heard of that before.
Lots of choices lots of potential power.

I was told to buy a crate motor....got the 330 hp Vortec...it rolled in at 350 hp with all the options I ordered. Spent many a dollar and WAS NOT IMPRESSED! My first instinct was to buy an older 4-bolt main block and have it built locally...coulda saved hundreds of dollars....I really wish I'd tuned those other guys out.
I've also talked to several crate owners that said the same thing I said. If you really want a good motor get an older block and build it. Forget spending the big bucks, it's not worth it!!

I prefer to build my own motors...crate motors are OK if you don't have the knack to build your own, or all the tools you need to build it.
