I've notice that some parts listed for El camino's say for years 82-87 while some others say 78-81. is there anything that much different besides grilles and headlight? just curious

During those years the front ends changed.

The Elky went from an "A" body to a "G" body about that time, I'm pretty sure.

78-81 El Caminos are technically an A-body and 82-87 are technically a G-body. Other than the obvious header panel, grill, and headlight differences, there are quite a few suspension component differences between the A-body and G-body.

The 78 has no ECM I believe, and a different style gauge cluster.

What they said + they changed the dash a bit and dropped the 350 engine after 1979.

Computers were added in 1982. Chances are if it says 78-81 it will still fit the 82-87's. Most parts list 78-87.

Good example of parts that won't fit. Headers...after 1981 the 305's had air injection and a special header is needed if you want to retain the system.

Also front fenders differ a bit...78-81 no side marker light in fender...82 and up side marker light mounted to fender.
