I almost expected a picture of you covered in oil from some mishap. Does that make me a bad person?
Thanks for the writeup though, will be useful.

Well I dunno about fuel level, but AutoMeter has a little 3-guage pod thing that looks pretty slick. It's about 35 bucks at any auto parts store.

Thanks for posting that! We can't always assume that everyone knows how to do that.

Here are a few tips and tricks I'd like to add:

1. Car ramps are very easy to use, and a lot safer than jacking up the vehicle if you need the clearance underneath.

2. A piece of cardboard underneath the drain pan will catch any splashes. (I usually make a mess getting the filter off.)

3. Keep a dedicated "oil change" funnel in a coffee can in your garage. Only use it for motor oil, and put it back in the can when you are done. You will never need to wipe it off or clean it, and it will always be clean for the next use.

4. Make a reference card. Write the filter type, weight and number of quarts required and even the wrench size for the drain plug on a 3x5 index card. (you can keep this in your glove box). If you don't have that info memorized, you'll never have to look it up again. I actually have this information written on a piece of a box from a replacement oil filter that lists the equivelant filters from 6 other brands. I also include the wrench size, because we have 3 different vehicles at home. Some are english, some are metric, and this way I always take the right size wrench under that car with me!

5. Try using rubber gloves. After 25 years of going bare-handed, I tried wearing disposable rubber gloves for the first time today. Say what you will, but I will never change oil without them again!

Hey that is awesome, you should get bored more often. Who's the hot girl at the end of your page? :-D

Changing oil with rubber gloves is one hella great plan. Used oil has many toxins that are soooo dangerous to your health. Definitely for you guys who do this for a living.

BTW, jacks and stands are FAR safer than ramps.

BEWARE!! In pic #2 it looks like that boston terrier is sniffing at the passenger's door...a leg-hike may not be far behind! 8O

I tried it so that clean up was easier. I got tired of old oil under my fingernails! It worked great!

BTW, jacks and stands are FAR safer than ramps.

How do you figure? Ramps keep the suspension in the design position, keeping the weight distributed properly. I've seen vehicles fall off jacks and stands, but never a ramp.

As long you set the parking brake then the ramps are just as safe as jacks w/jack stands.

Whenever I jack up vehicles I always jack both sides up and put jack stands under them.
