Hey all, I'm not sure if I'm posting this in the right category, but anyways... I am wanting to cut down on the heat inside my '83 elky and thought window tinting would help? Anyone try to tint their own windows? I see several kits for sale at local parts stores, but I don't want to have a huge mess (peeling/scratches) a couple weeks down the road, ya know? Any tips/ideas would be much appreciated. Thanks!!

The side windows pose little or no problem. However if you are thinking of putting tint on the back window of an 5th generation, you cold be looking for trouble. That window is best left to the pros. Have only seen one person who could do it in one piece. Most shops do it in at least 2 pieces. If you decide to do it yourself..pay a little more for quality film...follow the directions closely......and take your time. 3M puts out pretty good film.
Good luck,
Mike

Yes the rear window is a pain, take it to a pro; and find one who will do it with one piece.

i use to tint my own windows.if you tint your self and your new to it the best tips i can give you are.
1.dont buy tint from auto parts store!!!buy tint from tint shop its much better and easier to work with.they sell it by the foot.
2.i use joy dish soap.keep spraying keep very wet, very wet!
like everyone else said the back window of the 5th is very tricky.if i do mine myself i would only try if i take window out.its tricky cause it bends out instead of in.

Hmm, well maybe it isn't something I want to tackle myself? I certainly don't want some crappy result from a couple days frustration!! I'll call around and see what local shops want for the job. Any idea what would be a fair price to pay to have it done? I really appreciate the info, THANKS!!!

i wouldnt pay more than $150.for whole car.$125 would be good price
i got a price for only the back window for $80.
just be sure they can do your back window in one piece.i wouldnt pay to have it done in 2 pieces.

I don't know if prices are higher where you live or if we've just got it lucky in Virginia.

The pro shop that does my windows is the same one that does tinting for Chevy and Ford dealers. My last car (4 doors + rear) cost $75 for 3M film and warranty.

Take care.

it would be eaiser for you to look trough the yellow pages and call a few shops and get a quote.i dont know what state your in?it would be unwise to think prices in every state would be the same.
most shops use 3m film and buy it in 100 foot rolls so they get it for cheap.but remember the auto part stores sell 3m tint that is just crap.like bowtie said look for a shop that does work for dealers.

i live in california

like i always say do it once and do it right,or dont do it at all...

Replacement smoked glass should be available.(May not get your desired shade) It does work well in my climate. Looks clean and neat. Won't fade or peel off. Cost may be a little more but if your in it for the long haul it's worth it.

I have them in my 69 truck. All gasses are smoked except the front.(smoked at the top) Malibu glass is available, but not sure about the back glass. Oh yeah, the night glare is not as bad as tint.

http://www.elcaminostore.com/store/index.php?cat=11 Some models did not come with tinted glass. It was an option. For darker effect, tint rear window.
