: Buddy Disrespected The Camino
ColdBastrd 08-15-2003, 01:10 PM I called up a buddy of mine who works at a tire store to get myself some tires for the Camino. He asked me what I was putting the tires on. So I told him we just got a '72.
He started laughing and said "why would you want one of those?". I told him that we like it and think it's pretty cool. He went on to tell me that only Mexican's buy those to make into low riders or hoppers. And why I should of bought a truck or a Chevelle instead. And how they are a stupid car. He went on and on(you get the idea). So I was just like whatever dude, just get me the tires! I only keep in touch with him to get good deals on tires in case your wondering why I'd bother listening to it.
Anyone else ever run into simular BS?
Skullzz13 08-15-2003, 01:58 PM Grrr.... that woulda pissed me off... you should kick him in the teeth or sumptin.
a73elkyss 08-15-2003, 05:29 PM I get some of that grief myself from time to time, mostly from people who don't own any type of classic. I've never been dis'd from other classic owners though. Doesn't matter what make or model, if you own something that has survived the test of time, then it's all good. For the few who do open their pie holes, I just tell 'em it's a Elky thing and they just won't understand. It's not worth trying to explain.
Besides, I bet your "buddy" will be saying something totally different when you make your Elky as good as your Z!
As far as the tires go, I'd check out www.tirerack.com. They got some great deals on tires.
ElkyPete 08-16-2003, 05:48 AM I think I would tell him to go screw himself! I would find tires anywhere else. And if he is not the owner I would tell the owner / manager why they would never again get my business. What is he driving a Toyota?
Some people don't have any taste at all. Yeah, when I was re-doing my 76 I had some sketches of the truck with some paint schemes I thought would look nice on it. I like getting an idea of what it will look like. Anyway someone at my work had made a comment about my truck and what turned out to be the final choice for a paint job. He made close to the same comment. After it was done I drove it to work, and still do from time to time, and his comments changed. Not that it mattered much to me then or now.
Its your truck, do what you want with it. "Who gives a Fat Baby's Ass" what someone else thinks?
Skullzz13 08-16-2003, 11:40 AM one of the many reasons i opted to get my elky is that its such a unique vehicle. So, anyone gives me negative crap about my elky, who cares? they're prolly driving the same thing as 500,000 others out there!
Will7128301 08-16-2003, 10:18 PM Negative comments = Overflowing jealousy :)
theelcaminofactory 08-17-2003, 07:01 PM What exactly does he drive? I'll bet it's something that everyone else has.
83choochoo 08-17-2003, 07:03 PM I know id be looking for another place to buy my tires id never buy any thing from buddy not even a valve stem. he must be driving a ricer with a big shopping cart handle on the rear.
70sChevys 08-17-2003, 08:44 PM What a moron...he probably saw "The Mexican" and decided to adpot that idiotic remark for your benefit. No one needs someone who has no sense for a "connection".
If someone "disses" your ride, then he'll probably do the same to you behind your back....I don't call them friends.
mistaconquista 08-18-2003, 06:13 AM Man, I'm glad I live in KC, MO. Here everyone respects my car. There are a few numb-nuts out there, but they shut up once they see it in person. I mean really, the nerve of that guy to dis the Cowboy Cadillac! It's sad too, because my junior class all drive Civics, Saturns, and Tempos, and then there's me with my elky, and my friend Andrew with his 91 Camaro RS.
ColdBastrd 08-18-2003, 07:03 AM What exactly does he drive? I'll bet it's something that everyone else has.
He drives a '98 Vette. Yeah one of those guys :P Don't you hate it when you go to a car show and the Vette guys look down on anything else. Hello it's a Chevy! What gets me the most about those guys is alot of them don't even know how to turn a wrench.
Anyway,he was going to get back to me but he hasn't(it's a Goodyear dealer),so I called up another guy I know this morning who's gonna get me a set of BF Goodrich's. Done deal :D
theelcaminofactory 08-18-2003, 08:03 AM Well not everyone who owns a Vette is an ignorant SOB, but this guy sure seems to fit the bill. I'd steer clear of him. Fix up your Elky, like maybe drop in one of those 572 cubic inch crate motors with Ramjet fuel injection, and then pull up alongside him at a stoplight some day and teach him the meaning of the words "respect" and "fear".
2-Elkys 08-18-2003, 01:07 PM What a great country we live in we can all like or dislike whatever we want! Personaly i hate Mustangs but thats just me... But what do i know i like Elky's.
mistaconquista 08-18-2003, 06:58 PM Yes, I hate mustangs too, except the 1965. I respect, I don't like it, but I respect it because it is a classic. I hate Ford in all accounts really. But then that is me. Hence the signature.
gbcamaro78 08-19-2003, 12:31 PM I ran into a guy who had an 84 mustang that he thought was pretty fast. I tried to race him in my camaro but he said that with the 502 I had in it it wasnt a fair race. So when I went home and brought back my elky he just laughed at me............untill I beat him by 4 car lengths in the 1/4 mile . He wouldnt even talk to me after that. Oh well his loss.
Gozer 08-19-2003, 01:08 PM Mmmmmm! Barbecued Mustang is almost as tasy as Fried Rice! :-D
82Ellie 08-26-2003, 09:16 PM I got the same kind of **** when I had made it known that an El Camino would be (and is!) my dream car (which I have!) I was asked if I wanted to be a Mexican, and was told that the car/truck concept of the El Camino was stupid.. Then again, the people that said that DID drive ricers...hmmmmmm....
70sChevys 08-26-2003, 09:25 PM So now you can say you've encountered a not-so-rare and miniscule form of life known as the mental midget! There are more Mexicans in ricers with big wings and boom box stereos than in Elkys!!
ElkyPete 08-27-2003, 10:22 AM Some buy it and some build it. :D
I don't have a lot against Ford or Dodge. I like beating them and when it happens them beating me. Some do its a fact.
I don't care for riced up cars but that is my taste and if someone has something stupid looking that they put a fare amount of work into I am not going to tell them its a POS. I will tell them that it is just not my "Style". Like an ugly girl that wants to date, most will not tell her she is repulsive, you kindly say "Your NOT my type" It saves feelings and possibly a fight. I will generally pick, if possible, something about the car that is not so hideous and tell them I like that or "That is pretty cool".
Most kids now days, well lots maybe not most, don't know what it feels like to drive a car with Horse Power. I saw a Cavalier this morning on the way to work, kid was driving and he had a "Jegs" sticker in the back window and a NASCAR sticker. Now really! What the heck does Jegs sell that goes on a Caviler? Muffler? Jr. Dragster Wing maybe?
Car manufacturers tout 260 Hp! Its a selling point! "This Lexis" has 260 "Heart Throbbing Horse Power" Come on! Hell the V6 Camaro had 200 without trying. And when that Lexis brakes down throw it away it cost too much to fix so just get another and talk about how "Good" they are.
At least Ford still makes Muscle cars even if they don't have muscle. So don't be too hard on the "Stang" owners. What other choice do they have now days?
Elkys were the perfect vehicles. No room to haul a bunch of people so no one to mess up the car except you and it is rated as a truck because of the Bed so Insurance is pretty cheap. It drives like a car and with the right touches it drives like a "Two Seater Sport Car with a Bed for Insurance Purposes!" :D Can't ask for much more than that. IMOHO
82Ellie 08-27-2003, 12:01 PM Elkys were the perfect vehicles. No room to haul a bunch of people so no one to mess up the car except you
Damn straight! And I won't be giving everyone rides everywhere like my brother did when he had an extended cab GMC, my motto's going to be "Whoever offers more gas money gets the ride!" Oh yeah, and of course no cigarettes come near my truck, and no beverages without caps that don't spill :P
ElkyPete 08-27-2003, 12:52 PM There was a bumper sticker that said something like that back in the late 70's early 80's "Ass, Gas or Grass no one rides for free!"
82Ellie 08-28-2003, 08:06 AM
Damn straight! I've seen that one before -- how could I have forgotten?
theelcaminofactory 08-28-2003, 09:30 AM OK lets see, Ford still makes muscle cars. GM quit making them. Whoa, wait a minute! The Goat is baaaaak(!) and quite possibly meaner then ever. 8)
70sChevys 08-28-2003, 07:07 PM You have a good point...Ford has it right these days and GM is way off base (at least for me). I've never bought a new car and wouldn't start now, but if I were forced to get one tomorrow, it wouldn't be from the General...
I saw that Mach 1 at the state fair last year...not bad looking at all. If you look at the new Mustang from the Detroit Auto show last year (the one that looks like the '68 Shelby GT-500KR)...they have the ball in their court when it comes to old school performance and looks.
GM is making perfect candidates for the big wheel and boombox crowd...
SKULL 08-28-2003, 08:26 PM  Mabye you just need to back into his Fiberglass Cage at about 10 MPH & see how far the crack goes??? I bet it will go all the way up the crack of his ass!!! I'd wouldn't buy tire's from a jerk like that...I'd tell his boss that they just lost a customer for his two timing mouth...imagin...a Chevy owner cuttin down another Chevy...this BOY need's a good ass kickin! "SKULL"
Siaye 09-04-2003, 09:03 PM Have you guys seen the new Saleen Mustangs?
At first I was thinking it was just a Mustang for ricers, but the engine is really powerful... In fact, it's about a half-taurus short of a Z06  .
I, myself, wouldn't buy a Mustang unless it was a Shelby, Cobra, or Saleen. I can't stand Ford too much. I hate F-150's and they're everywhere! The only descent Ford car comming out is the new GT, but for only $150K, it must not be as good as it looks.
ElkySS 09-05-2003, 07:25 AM Many auto enthusiasts believe the Corvette Z06 is one hell of a muscle car. Exotic, world class performance for a decent price. And factory stock from GM, not a tuner aftermarket special. :P
Actually, I don't dislike any particular manufacturer. In the past I've owned a '57 T-bird and restored a '66 Mustang. I wouldn't mind owning a GT350 Mustang or a '70 Hemi-Cuda, in addition to a couple of Elky's and my Z06. I've owned a couple of early GTOs. Wonder what the new one will be like when it comes to performance? It'd be pretty BAD if it came with the GM LS1.
I just love classic and collectible vehicles, period. Darn, I need more garage! And a more understanding spouse! Too bad most auto museums aren't profitable endevors...I'd sure like to head that way.
Tommy 09-05-2003, 04:35 PM gb, love that story. I do not care for fords either. Around here I get alot of good comments on my elky. I haven't hear anything bad yet.
GMheaven 09-06-2003, 06:37 PM I had a guy in a 95' stang try to dis my elky. I said, "that's fine, lets race." Of course, he thought he was a big shot and said when and where. There's a strip not to far from where I live, about 30 minutes, after 10 pm it's pretty empty other than ricer and classic cars. Everyone goes there to show off, this road is called Patten. It's the hype here, where everyone goes to show off.
Well, we lined up, my small block 350 trans am motor (with a brand new edelbroch intake no less!) vs his 3.8 L V6. Now, anyone can see just by looking at the stats already what happened, but I'm going to waste space and tell you anyway. We both sat at the line in neutral, my car dwarfed his at that point, so much that I put my hand cupped to my ear as to indicate I could no longer hear his motor. Everyone watching, well, they were already laughing at this little show.
We left the line, my tires spun, likewise with his. He poped the car into overdrive and took a small lead off the line. When my tires caught (btw, my car was in drive the entire time...man, I need a manual bad!) the car litterally jumped past his, leaving him "in the dust" and eating bits of rubber as the car spun the tires again when the auto-tranny shifted into 2ond. I beat him by 5 or 6 car lengths through 5 lights. We went back to the McDonalds where we had started the race infront of. Everyone just stared at my car, those shiny Cragar SS wheels glistening beneath the golden arches. I got out of the car, turned to the guy in the stang and said, "Get a real car." Shut my door, walked in and had a super-sized double quarter pounder with cheeze to celebrate.
70ELCO 09-08-2003, 08:39 PM I would of turned around and looked side to side and said...Are you talking to me? Are you talking to me? As I left his shop he would of had about 10 tires stacked up around him.
And 72Elky is right on with the tirerack link. They are fantastic! Right after you place your order you get up and go to your front door and the tires are there!!
Scully 09-17-2003, 08:51 PM Personally, I'd much rather have a beer or two with the "Mexican Low Riders" than with this bozo...
427chev67 09-26-2003, 08:47 AM I live in KC Mo also and all I get is people asking to buy my '81 elco and it's still in primer.
