I need a referral to a reputable gagage or mechanic in Philadelphia or its Western suburbs that is experienced with G bodies and can do a complete rebuild of the 305 engine in a 1987 El Camino or replace it with a f/i 350. Any suggestions will be much appreciated.

Just out of curiosity, why don't you just get a replacement Crate engine or a 350 crate from GM? Its possibly cheaper for you and if you do get the 305 you'll also get a 36,000 Mi warranty. Your probably not going to get that at a garage.
By the way................

Welcome to NECOA / ECC! :D We're all glad that you found us!

Elky, thanks for the suggestion. It seems that we in all likelihood will go with a GM crate 350. My son (and co-adventurer in this project) wanted to try to rebuild the 305 for reasons of fuel economy. But we have figured out that any fuel savings would be offset by the cost of rebuilding. The cost of installing fuel injection on a 1987 also seem to be high, and we will problbly stay with a carb. While the engine is being done, we are going to have the transmisson rebuilt and posi added. We will then address the suspension.
Thanks again for the reply.

The crate engine is the way to go. When the junk yard 350 that came in my Elky went south a few years ago I got a crate 350 from Apple Chevy in York PA. They handle alot of engines there and I got it for around 1200 or so. just make sure to keep the old one handy if your putting it in yourself as you'll need to take some stuff off it like the dipstick and some odds and ends, its been a few years so I cant remember all of it. But for the price to get a brand new motor w/ warranty its a great deal. Mine is just the standard 240 hp but they do make a 330 hp one thats around 2000.
