I have a 1982 el camino conquista. the radio and speakers are shot, i would like to put a cd player in, but the place where the original radio is is too large. what is the best way to do put a new radio and cd player, without getting to pricy. i also would like to know what size speakers i need to put them in the original place in the dash.

In the 82 you should have a standard size radio, the best way would be is to buy a radio you like and an install kit. the speaker sizes should be 3-1/2

so the 82 is a standard size, it looks a heck of alot bigger with the knobs and all that. but i will try the instalation kit and see if that works

If your radio has 2 big knobs and and a rectangle between them it's a standard radio. the install kit is simple to put in (4 screws and a sleeve) the only modification you need to do is to the cover, the eaziest way is to take the sleeve that come around your new radio and trace around it then cut up to the line(this is if you don't have some type of template)..

I have an 82 conquista as well, with the woodtoned dash around the radio. I'm thinking of getting a new (replacement) front plate in black, as those wood ones are pretty hard to find, just incase I (or someone else) wants to put it back to stock.

Actually it is standard on chevy's and fords... but it isn't the industry standard. It is refered to as a Double Din, the aftermarket radios are usually only a Single Din. Go to Wal-Mart and find the installation kit. The instructions are fairly self explainatory.

what i did with my 82 el camino was pretty simple and very cheap. i cut a piece of 1/4" oak plywood to mount the new radio in, i glued 2, 1/2"x1" pieces of wood to the back of the plywood above and below the rectangular hole for the radio to help support the radio sleeve. i made it at an angle so i can see the faceplate without leanin down. it also looks very nice. if i knew how to put a picture from my computer on here i would show yall
