Ok, stick with me, as I know *little* about El Caminos, as I've mainly been into rare Chevelles and Camaros and such...but anyway...
A guy stopped by work today to ask me some questions about a supposed *rare car* he found...this guy is a local, and most of the time the folks around here find an old car of any kind and think they've struck gold 'cause they've heard of some silly price at Barrett-Jackson. Anyway, he starts off with the usual "I found this really rare car, 1 of 1, original, an old man was driving it at Wal-Mart"...so I start asking him details...
He says it's a '64 El Camino, 327 4-speed, creme colored, with funky dual side exhaust with square outlets, chrome reverse looking wheels, dual fog lights, power windows w/controls in a console, seats had cow hide(leather?) center panels in them, and it had a machined-type finish dash. He then gives me a LONG story about how it was *supposedly* originally LBJ's car (yes, the president), and being from Texas the ex-President had it special built with some funky options. Said he doesn't have any paperwork on the car, except for a 1968 dated(?) "Chevelle" magazine that has an article about the car claiming it was lost but was worth some bucks if found, and that when the National Archives declassifies some more of LBJ's personal papers *then* he'll be able to prove it's the real deal.
Well, the story sounds absurd, 'cause he goes on to tell me they only made a few Elky's in '64...so I jump on Chevelles.com, and pull up the production stats for him...well, a LOT more were made than he expected, but I clicked on the El Camino page, and up pops the picture below...and he yells "that's it, that's the car!". So, I tell him I'll do some digging, and that leads me here...
Does anyone know if the options on this car were RPO's, or even dealer stuff, or even a Regional package of some sort? Or is this whole story this guy fed me even possible? Did LBJ in fact have a '64 Elky? Or does anyone know the current whereabouts of the '64 NYC auto show car? I naturally had my doubts about the whole thing, 'cause rarely does anything of value ever end up here in Hillbillyville, but I thought I'd ask nonetheless...thanks!
