my next project is going to be installing a b&m megashifter. i have quite a few other posts about it but i still have some questions. How hard is it to remove the column shifter all together? It is possible without completly tearing column apart? The column probally will be coming out to get painted so what will it take to get it out? Also what is the part number for the installation kit for a grant elite series steering wheel for a 78 elky? thanks in advance for any help.

Don't need to remove the steering column, just lock up the linkage at the firewall inside the engine compartment. Removing the steering column, especially a tilt wheel with cruise control is a tedious process and should be avoided.

I have a tilt but no cruise control. i just dont liek the idea of cutting off the column shifter. i would like to remove it altogether and make it appear as thought it never had one.

I did the same project--I bought a used floor shift tilt column without cruise from Dixie Monte Carlo---was pretty inexpnsive---bolted in no problem---2 hour job----about a week later I changed the rag joint on the lower part of the shaft

hey just checked with dixie monte carlo, and they have the lower bowl that goes on the steering column that would replace the column shifter, does anyone know how hard it would be to replace just that part? Another option would be to replace the whole column with one of the console type. Does anyone know where to find one of those?

I rebuild columns all the time, '80'S are great for coming loose, and it's always the same 4 bolts the hold it together. If you have the ability to replace the column, you should be able to take it apart and replace any part in it. The tube you have to remove just slips out, when you get to it. Take out your manual Motors, Chilton's, Haynes, etc, any that has a exploded view of the column. after you remove the column, (it's easier to remove the steering wheel in the car) Get a wire any wire a couple feet long. as you remove the parts on the shaft put the in order on the wire, so that you remember the order they came off. Just drive the pin out of the shifter, and pull out the shift handle. If you have tilt (don't tilt the column when you take it a part, it's easier) you will need to buy a pin puller for the hinge pins, (cheap) When you get to the 4 bolts at inside the bottom you don't need to pull them all the way out to separate the bottom tube to the bowl, you actually give it a twist and the pull out like a tail light bulb. If you do remove the bolts all the way you just NEED to remember which way the plate under it is/was.
Once you take one apart and put it back together, you'll be able to take just about any Gm one apart, they are all basically 6 different types (after the one piece shaft), 3 tilt, and 3 non-tilt. '93 and older. I haven't worked on a '94 and newer yet.
