Have any of you ever used one of the smaller perm. magnet starters off of a newer generation small block on your older generation (305) engines?

I found a starter from a 99 5.3 Chevy pickup at the salvage yard today but it seems to have a wierd bolt pattern.

All the older smallblocks used either a straight across or a staggered bolt pattern. This new type starter had a bolt pattern that seemed to be between the two. It was close to being straight across (which is what I need), but was slightly staggered, although not nearly as much as the old staggered style!

Will this work on my 305?

Anyone have experience with these new gen. smallblock starters? Thanks!

no it wont work, unless you change the bolt holes on your block, which brings up the questions of how and why? i would use an 1876555 its a heavy duty 454 starter that is the same size/bolt patterns as yours but is built better. and cheaper. $67.69

TRIK-56, Why don't you just buy a rebuilt, why are you going to a junk yard?

elka79, if you have a heat soak problem a new starter won't help, you need to find what is causing the problem. Do you have headers?

Motorbreth,

Thanks for the info and tip about the 454 starter. I appreciate it!

78 Hot Rod Elky.

The guys that own this particular junkyard are friends of mine that I drop by to visit pretty frequently. They are always giving me stuff or selling me things dirt cheap. This particular starter was off a low mileage 99 Chevy pickup they were dismantling to part out and I asked about what they would take for the starter.
Since it was for me they said $40, anyone else, its gonna be $75.
Personally, I would trust a slightly used GM starter more than some of the rebuilt units they sell today.

This same salvage yard sold me a full set of four 1982 Camaro Z-28 five spoke aluminum wheels in excellent condition yesterday for 50 bucks!
Just have to find center caps for them. I want to have them fully polished and put them on my Elky. Not a bad deal huh?

It is nice when you know someone at the yard, and yes I too being in the auto/truck repair industry know very well what you can buy from these autopart houses when it comes rebuilt, not the quality it used to be.

Just buy a high-torque mini starter, they work great and only weigh 8 lbs.

Late model PM starters will work on genI engines but not the ones from genIII engines. I beleive the Vortec 350 and 454 had them toward the end just before the move to the LSx.
