Has anyone upgraded their alternator to a higher output? Such as a 140 amp or even 200 amp. When you performed the upgrade did you also upgrade the ground wires and power wire coming from the alternator to the battery? Where did you buy them from or get the materials to make them? Sorry for all the questions but I want to be well prepared when it comes time to upgrade the charging system for stereo system. I'm wanting to upgrade because with just my headunit and component set in the car the lights flicker just a tad. I know it will get worse when I finally add subs and amps to my car. Thanks.

HOW MANY AMPS ARE YOU PLANNING TO USE? HOW MUCH WATTS? WHAT BRAND ?YOU DO NEED TO UPGRADE WIRE FROM AMP.YOU ARE GONNA NEED A THICKER GAUGE. ALSO THE CRHOME ALTERNATORS ARE A BAD IDEA CAUSE THEY TRAP HEAT AND WONT LAST AS LONG.

I USE TO PUT SYSTEMS TOGEATHER AND AM PLANNING ONE FOR MY 78 ELKY RIGHT NOW.IM GONNA INSTALL A 140 AMP WHICH WILL BE MORE THAN ENOUGH.
FEEL FREE TO P M ME EVEN FOR THOSE LITTLE STUPID ?S I DONT MIND TALKING SYSTEMS.PLUS I HAVE A LOT OF IDEAS.I JUST PUT A COMPLETE SYSTEM IN MY SISTERS RIDE THE OTHER NITE.

I have a 140 amp alternator in my '78 right now. I got it from Summit. It works great and I haven't had any problems with it. I bought it for the system that I was putting in (never really finished the system... still working on it), but the old 95 amper bit the dust and need to be replaced. So I busted open the package for the 140 and installed it. Works with no problem, battery is ALWAYS charged and the lights seem to be much brighter.
