: Speedometer way off

My 81 Camino's speedometer is anywhere from 5-10 mph off. Originally I had the V6 and stock auto tranny, but now I run a 350 with 350 tranny. Wheel and tires are stock size. That tranny was out of a 78 or 79 Malibu. I don't know what gears I ended up having on there. Is there any "sure-fire" way like the color of gears to tell if I'm using the right ones?

I have a chance this weekend to get a slew of parts off a 78 Malibu. It too has a 350 auto tranny. Is it worth my time to grab the gears off that?

Also, would I have to change the gear on the output shaft or just the one that I can get to where the cable connects?

Thanks!

I just got a new 120 mph speedometer and i didn't change any gears or my tire size, would it read accurately even though my last speedometer only went up to 85?

also, my speedometer fitting for the cable won't fit into the cable, it spins needle, but there is no way it will stay like that, i had to hold it to see if it would work, I read that the company makes adapters for it, but i could find no such thing.

I had good luck going to a local auto trans rebuild shop with my old (green) driven gear and a sad face. :( He dug in his bin of parts and swapped it for a used yellow driven one, no charge. When I installed it (simple procedure by the way), the speedo was right on.

Once you know which one (color) you have now, the website URL Txbusa provided above will let you know what to ask for.

I think I've seen it available as a multiple choice pack in a larger auto parts store. If you know which one you need, you can always get it at a dealer.

good luck.
