Guru's,
Is it necessary, or even beneficial, to make an enclosure for subs if they are rated for "Free Air Use?"

Appreciate your views and experience.

Take care.

"Free Air" can be kind of misleading ("Infinite Baffle" would be more accurate). In order to get optimum performance you must seal the front sub wave from the rear sub wave. I have done this in cars before with the subs hanging from the rear deck but to do it properly in an El Camino you would have to completely seal off the smugglers box. IMO, since that sub only requires .75ft^3 sealed it may be easier to just build an enclosure and save some storage space as well 8) .

Makes perfect sense. Thank you sir.

May yet be able to put a vented battery box and some other stuff back there. We'll see.

Take care.

if ur looking at those sony subs, DONT BUY!!!!!! not worth it, they wont last long and u dont get much out of them, now if u want a real sub they r called RE subs they r 1000 times better then sonys, and u get more bang for your buck, if uwanna know prices for them email me at 78elcaminoman@sbcglobal.net

here is the site for subs: http://reaudio.com/
in this case if going in smugglers box i wouldent recomend going over the RE SX subs after those to much air space required

Mr. Marv has built some beautifull sub enclosures for elky 5th gens as he owns one him self and is an audiophile on top of everything else.

Shoot him a message with the dimensions of your sub and such and he can make you something you'll love and fits like it was meant to be there, Hope to have some pictures of mine installed soon, you can check out the enclosure I got from him in his gallery, it is the 2 10" sub box.

He made a beautifull sob box for a 12 that was shapped like a chevy Bowtie which given your online name, might be something of interest, a picture of it is also in his galery.

Here is a link to his site that has some of his other projects.

Thanks Wayne. I've talked with Marv in the past and just sent him a PM as you suggested.

You bet I noticed his Bowtie enclosure! Not clear how it could be used with two 10" rather than one 12" like he used. We'll see.

Take care.

I AGREE 100% WITH mr marv.ALSO SONY SUCKS ALL SHOW BUT NO GO.YOU ARE BETTER OFF GETTING NON FREE AIR SUS AND PLACING IN 1 OR 2 BOXES.YOU MIGH EVEN HAVE ROOM LEFT FOR?FREE AIR ARE ONLY GOOD FOR CARS WHERE AT LEAST YOU HAVE YOUR TRUNK SPACE WIDE OPEN.BIG JOB TO SEAL OFF SMUGGLERS BOX (DONE IT ALREADY).BOXES WILL SOUND BETTER.
