Hi guys, ( yes Im a newbie too )
Just recently aquired a'79 elkie with a factory 4-speed.
Havent had the chance to fully inspect it yet, but it appears to be all original with a rebuilt engine....
Havent had ANY luck finding info on the 4-speed for this year...???
Is this a good find? or just another common elkie?
Any info would be appriciated.
Not sure if Im gonna keep it or sell it, dont really have the time for it.
Thanks !

Although GM made quite a few with the 4 speed, (exact number I wouldn't be able to tell you) there are probably a lot less left today. So I guess that yeah you could say thats it's a somewhat rare find. What kind of shape is it in? Is it worth restoring? If you don't have time for it, why not post some pics of it here and see if you can find a buyer? Either way, don't let it go to waste if it is restorable!

Hey, great thanks for the info....
Its in really great shape, the body is straight, no dents, nice tires and rims......
The thing has got some serious power, specially having a 4 speed...Is nearly impossible to stop and go with out smokin' em.....:)
I have decoded the vin and found that it was a facoty v-6 200.....BUT there is NO way thats whats in there now.....The engine has been done up a bit ...
Not much more that this needs to complete for a sweet rod!
As for my time...I have none...So I am going to be selling it...
Will get some pics up here this afternoon....
Thanks again for all the info!

Welcome to ECC Alex!
If the original engine was a 3.3L V6 then the four speed is not original to your Elky. The only manual transmission you could get with a V6 was the 3 speed. The four speed was only available with the V8's.

Thanks Ernie for the info and the warm welcome.
Yah, the guy I bought this from told me it was a 305 4sp...
But in decoding the vin the letter "M" I am told represents a v6...
Hmm...
The shifter appears to be original and not "after market installed"
Either way this thing has power and is really fun to drive!
Thanks

I have an 80SS that had a factory 4 speed with the 305 and it was fast and fun, but the gears were all really pretty short especially when compared to my brother's 81 vette/4 speed/350 and it revved really high at hiway speed. The tranny was developing problems so I had a pro-friend (so I thought) change the tranny to a Camaro 5 speed (T5?) but did a halfassed job of it all. But it is lots more fun to drive and now I have an overdrive so that the hiway speed rpm's are now at 2000. The clutch is all wrong and the shifter came up through my console. Someone told me that I should have had the clutch changed to a hydrauic one.
So I'd like to punch up the engine and get a posi rear end maybe with lower number gears so that the gears have a little bit more legs to them. Or maybe take the 350 out my other brother's 81 Z28 but I'm not sure that the tranny will mate. But... ah you know: time, money.

I put a T5 in my 80 El Camino (back in 1984?). I used a F-body hydraulic clutch setup. It was so much easier than installing a mechanical clutch linkage.

A friend of mine has an 80-ish Olds Cutlass Salon and he says that it's a cross between a 442 and a Supreme, point being that it was factory with a nice posi rear end and a 307 with over 230 horse. This sounds like a nice quick mod for Elky's.
Anyone ever hear of putting these other GM brands (MonteCarloSS, Grand Prix, GN's) hot parts on Elky's?
