Same shop?

You should have asked them what they get for an overhaul these days.

The only way to come out in this game is to do it yourself. It's fun and you learn a lot. But, I do not know how the renting of a transmission jack would impact the bottom line total.

By the way, I recently hired Cottman to do a fluid change and routine maintenance on my 350C. While there, I asked what a rebuild would cost. They quoted $750, if no problems/surprises were encountered! The last time I had a rebuild, it cost me $385. It was done by an independent shop that offered the same warranty as those natiional chains. I like the sound of the new tranny from Summit. It's good to know. Thanks for posting this info.

Just remember that all Cottman transmission shops are franchises. Kinda like McDonalds. The one and only time I went to one, I asked the guy behind the counter a specific transmission question. He said he didn't know and had to get a technician from the shop to answer it. Come to find out, the guy behind the counter was the manager and didn't know anything about transmissions. I walked out...quickly.

A friend and I replaced a tranny on my elky in an old garage pit. Other than the heavy bulkyness it wasn't too bad. Had it done in a few hours. The tricky part was getting to the top bolts on the bell housing, wound up using several extensions and a steady hand.

Ernie, I am aware Cottman shops are franchises. They do not have a good reputation locally, but they had a deal on the fluid change service and I figured anyone could dump the fluid, replace the filter and gasket. I watched them closely and sure enough, got the old "there's foreign material in the pan" spin. From what I saw and learned, I would not recommend them for any work whatsoever. The manager was a very personable salesman who happend to be just a smooth talking front man. The worker bees moved so slowly I had to take a sighting on them to see when they moved. It was a good thing I was not paying by the hour. It took them about three times longer than it should to do a simple job. Still, the price was right, the job simple and I came out OK.
