: It runs But....
82 meeno 10-23-2005, 07:59 PM I just got my 305 started after a mild rebuild..... I apologize for the long post.
A Little background
cam/lifters(used)... one step up from stock.
new rings, main, and rod bearings, fuel pump, edelbrock performer, heads have been cleaned and fluxed, dist.cap,rotor....
I don't have the exhaust hooked up... i have stock manifolds on right now.... need to buy a new y-pipe.
I got it started today, it only ran for a short time then shut off.... I still have the valve covers off, the pcv line on the front of the carb(qjet)is connected to the pcv.
On the carb, I have 1 inch spacer on the intake, then carb sits on the gasket, then the spacer is underneath (is that right)?
Does this sound like a vacuum problem, or carb problem, or should i even worry about it until i have the y-pipe hooked up
txbusa 10-24-2005, 05:07 AM Button everything up, complete exhaust system, and then start your troubleshooting.

82 meeno 10-24-2005, 05:27 AM Thanks,
That's what I decided to do, I'll post back this weekend
old_coot 10-24-2005, 07:07 AM also the carb spacer should have a gasket both above and below it........................Dan

Got her going real good today... I went to parts store and bought a mounting gasket,,, Fired right up and didn't leak but, I can't keep her going with taking my foot off the gas...
I need to make some adjustments to the carb but,
does anyone have a pic of their carb with all the linkage hooked up?...
I'm missing something and can't put my finger on it.
Snaggle To0th 10-29-2005, 11:24 PM I dunno if you have an Edelbrock carb.....But I do and this is how I have mine set up and witht eh Edlebrock thorttle cable bracket for SBC(pt# EDL-8036)

Hope this helps u in any way.

Supercharged 86 10-30-2005, 04:56 AM Yeah, gasket on both sides of the spacer. Sounds like you did that now. If you can only keep it running for a little while, my first guess would be not enough fuel. The spacer isn't stock right? Spacers make the run a little leaner, but it shouldn't be enough to keep the engine from running. I know about nothing about Q jets, but maybe check the floats for being set too low or maybe even too high (flooding the engine). It could be as simple as a clogged up fuel filter. This is all assuming it's some problem related to fuel delivery.
82 meeno 10-30-2005, 05:33 AM Thanks for the pics.... Snaggle...
I see I'm missing one of the brackets on the side of the carb...
It needs a little adjusting also but, the bracket is major
Snaggle To0th 10-30-2005, 08:08 AM Your welcome.....most part stores should carry that bracket if they are selling edelbrock carbs....if you have the q-jet there is a bracket that goes on the back of the carb allowing to hold the kickdown and accelerator cable. The edelbrock bracket mounts on the intake manifold on the last 2 bolts if you didnt see that already. Your problem with your carb right now can be solved by checking ur fuel filter and simply replacing it and checkin the float levels.

82 meeno 10-30-2005, 06:35 PM yeah, i've got a q-jet..... i'm going to have to put a kit on it... it keeps flooding out...
mrmeno78 10-31-2005, 12:00 AM :? Q-jets have a problem when you build a motor i have tried 2 and got reid of them cause they wouldn't not work right. And went to an edelbrock 600cfm electric choke and it works great.

Well I got tire of debating and thinking about... i bought an Edelbrock today and will be working on it late tonight....
78 Hot Rod Elky 10-31-2005, 01:36 PM Go for it Ray, their are a few tricks of the trade to rebuilding a Q-jet so replacing it will be a good upgrade. Hope to see you on the road soon.

hey snaggletooth, i bought the same bracket, the only different is my kickdown cable is different from yours.....
Snaggle To0th 11-01-2005, 03:36 PM Uhmm.....Maybe the kickdown cables are a little different between 78 and 82? That I am unsure of! As long you can hook up the kickdown to go forward and the accelerator goes back it'll work!........I belive haha

82 meeno 11-01-2005, 07:44 PM Yeah, its a universal cable kit....
I got everything bolted on and she fired right up... This carb is very easy to adjust, glad i made the switch....
Need to put new studs in the exhaust manifold and I'm back on the road....
mnunn 11-02-2005, 12:04 PM Thinking back to the "it won't run when I take my foot off the gas" problem, could it be a vacuum leak somewhere, or something wrong with the idle circuit inside the carb, or have you already ruled those out as possibilities?

No vacuum leaks, and it was all ruled out when I bought the edelbrock carb.....
