Gsir8 10-25-2005, 04:53 PM Brand new bed panels and the panel behind the seat for my 72' Restoration project.
They're just laying there, still more prepping to do before I can weld them in.

Bowtie 10-26-2005, 07:50 AM That white color with the white background makes it hard to see the detail. :sarcasm:
Take care.

Take care.
Moneypit 68 10-27-2005, 07:33 PM I'd DEFINITELY like to know/see how your bed panels turn out...I'm planning on replacing the bed panels in my '68 (I've got some rust through on the pass. side)...it looks like with those panels that you are going to eliminate the smuggler's box cover, eh?
Billybob 10-28-2005, 06:40 AM Oh Greg will keep you posted, that's for sure.
They better come out great, we're taking our time and trying to do it right.
Yeah, the smugglers box cover is going away. Not by plan but only because that's how these panel come and I think it will look cleaner plus I can't imagine why I'd ever need to get in there anyway.
If you look at the top and bottom edges of these panels you see that they are just sheared off. This means I will have to crimp down the raised ridges so it is flat, then I can trim and weld. This is gonna be a bit of a trick because we want them to look right.
The supports under the bed and the rear corners needed a lot of work, but their coming along.
The whole bottom of this Cruck is gonna be new and should look great, once we're done with that we can really start moving along. The problem buying panels is that the freight will kill you - it can cost as much as the parts. I lucked out because these were in Cali and I had a truckload of freight coming anyway so it was free :-D

Remember the thread about who sent an Elky to a boneyard ? I could start one on who SHOULD have sent an Elky to a boneyard 8O
minnmirman 10-28-2005, 10:31 AM Crimping is for pimps
Moneypit 68 10-28-2005, 04:29 PM I'm feeling you, brother! Bed repair is not for the faint of heart. The rust in my bed over the years allowed water/snow/moisture to get to the right side bed support...rusted out about a foot of it. Every time I go to thinking about cutting out the bed and replacing the panel/support it makes me cringe! I have it "glassed" over right now...winter is coming up though and that's the "not driving the ElCamino" season...good a time as any to let the cutting wheel spin! 8)
Billybob 10-31-2005, 05:33 AM Yeah 68, that happened to ours too. I wasn't able to find any supports so we had to fab one up out of some channel we had (unistrut actually). I wasn't too bad really.

Billybob 11-03-2005, 10:14 AM It's funny you should say that. We were welding in those rear corners that rust out last night and I turned to Greg and said:
" You had to pick an El Camino. This has to be one of the hardest to restore, any other car this would just be the trunk and it wouldn't be all rusted out "
:-(
He just says "yeah dad" :?
Gsir8 11-03-2005, 06:18 PM Except cars with trunks aren't as cool as the El Camino
