i posted this in engine forum and now here,any one know a carb guy who will not rip me off ?.guys in engine forums said to run and not walk from this mech i went to for info on this.Im in san mateo.

trying to keep this short so here goes.Cold start car runs for about 20 seconds then stalls,start second time car idles warms up for a few minutes and then i can go.Talked to the mech at shop where i had smog work done...he said it could be a # of things from float adjustment to rebuild on the carb,funny thing he said to rebuild it would be about 600.00
and a new carb for 1500.00 is he pulling my chain here or what.He said because the carb is computer controlled thats where the money comes in.

Thanks
Dave

Dave, If it is the carb, you can get a rebuilt from parts stores for around $250. If you have time to play with it go to a bookstore or library and get a Chilton or Haynes equivalent manual. After you squirt some carb cleaner on the choke and still have trouble you may find it is a small adjustment or other simple fix. I second the motion to stay away from the aforementioned.

Hey i'm local to you in san jose.

I picked up a new 4bbl quadrajet w/ ecm hookups for 279 shipped from carbuerator express.com

there is also a place called recarbo in pittsburg near you, but they wanted close to the 600 price you got already.

if you are interested, I picked up the qjet to pass smog and intend on puttin back on my edelbrock 140? 6 or 8 I think.

anyhow, I put the carb on less than 3 months ago now, and if you want it, you can have it for 200 if you pick it up. runs great, just prefered the simplified vacuum hookups on the edelbrock, and since i'm gonna be swapping out all my ecm electronics and going to a non-computer controlled hei distributor i won't need the qjet.

let me know.

I could pull the qjet this weekend and put back on the edelbrock if you want it, and you are welcome to come check it out and see it run and such if you like. i have the paperwork from when i got it, so you may even be able to keep the warranty on it, may have only been a 90 day, but I think it was a year.

i'm at 650-279-4122 if you are interested.

I'm not ready to pull it off yet anyhow, so just keep in touch when the wife forgets about your latest computer upgrade :)
