Anyone have a good idea for geting all the old peeling chrome tape of the door panels? I did one door today it was a slow painful process. The new tape looks great but i am not looking forward to the other door.

Hopefully someone will know an easy way to remove the old stuff. Putting the new on was not bad at all.

85-SS-ELKY,

Don't know for sure if this will work or not but it works great on removing pin striping tape from the body.
Try heating the chrome tape up with a hair dryer on the hottest setting and see if it will come off easier that way.
The heat should soften the adhesive that holds it on so it can be removed easier.

I have a question for you. Where did you get the chrome tape to replace it with, how much did it cost, and does it stay on there really good?

I've tried a wide chrome tape I bought at the local parts store but it just won't stay stuck very long. Thanks.

Got the tape from ECC it was 18.00 and you get enought to do three doors. As for sticking real good ask me in a few weeks.. It sure does look good right now.

85-ss-elky,

Thanks for the info. I guess they made that especially for those 3 door Elkys you see all the time, huh? :D

I masked of the surrounding panel & sanded off the rest of the chome, I then spayed it with a plastic sealer & sprayed it semi gloss black. I think it looks good & hasn't come off yet.

I had asked a question a week or two ago about painting chrome trim parts and everyone sugested that i go with dupli-color chrome paint. I have not had a chance to try it yet but everyone seemed to be pleased with it.

I've used the paint on interior pieces and it is not like actually having chrome. It gets pretty close. So try it on something else first. See if you'll like the look for interior parts.

I used it to clean up the AC vent openings before I installed the new vents in y 76. I did a tiny border around the dash with it, that took forever to mask off, I used it on engine parts and they come out looking fine but more like polished aluminum then actually chrome. I also use it on the inside of the light buckets and behind the faceplates where dash lighting is low.

You could use a different adhesive with the tape, I've done that before when I had a problem with stuff that is suppose to have a sticky back but peels. 3M makes some yellow adhesive that is really good stuff.

Sorry to hear about the tape. My door panels on my 80 were gone I had to completely replace the panels so I didn't have to worry about the trim parts on them. I had planned on trying some things with the Stainless steel tape. I have a grill insert (custom) that I would like to see if I could do it with that stuff. I'd probably use Contact cement before. Its fiberglass and I'd like to have it chrome. So Stainless Steel tape is about what I can come up with.

you don't remember the name of the adhesive? I sure would like to get the tape to stick because it makes the chrome trim look like brand new till it starts to peel..

3m makes some good stuff, but I use pylobond 20. I am not sure if you can buy it because its for the military. We use it in the engine shop at the base I am stationed at. If it was me I would paint it black.

Re: ElkyPetes comment above. I agree about the looks of the chrome spray paint, but offer this option for the narrow areas, like the "edges"that used to be chrome and are now worn off and are just about impossible to mask. At any hobby store, you can buy "paint pens" in almost any color including silver and gold. Just shake it , press the point on a piece of paper a couple of times to get the paint flowing and draw away just like with a pencil. Works perfect to about 1/16" wide and if you're patient, you can go about an 1/8". The silver gives the same color as the chrome spray paint.
