I am going to use the rear defrost switch on an '86 SS console to control running lights. Can anyone tell me the wiring info on the back of the switch (hot, ground, etc.)?

Thanks, Jeff

Wiring diagram (http://elcaminocentral.com/article-114-thread-1-0.html) can be found here. If it doesn't help can you probe the leads with a multimeter? Black is normally ground and the hot lead should measure +12 to ground. You can also use continuity test on the switch itself to find the switched leads.

I Hope I have helped. :-)

There was never a rear defrost switch in an 86 El Camino. You must have a Monte Carlo instrument cluster since they had a rear window defroster option and the bezels were interchangeable with the El Camino. You can't make it work without having a latching relay because it's only a momentary switch.

Roger that...it's from a Monte Carlo. If that's the case I'll just stick another switch in there. Thanks for the info...

Is that to say that the 5th gen Elkies did not have an option of rear winder defroster?? That's too bad; I sure could have used it a few weeks back.

Ive heard that some elkys did come with a rear window defroster. My buddy with a green 83 says he has saw a few that had it.

That is correct, it was never an option in a 5th gen. However in the 80's J. C. Whitney sold an aftermarket adhesive rear window defroster kit that would allow you to install one.

I've seen that add-on kit at the FLAPs (Friendly Local Parts Store) but the ones I saw looked like they would be really ugly as they had wide strips of tape to plunk onto yer winder.

The PO of my '84 put some kinda plastic tint on the five rear winders and it works/looks good; I'm hoping to transfer those from the '84 into my '79 but then, I wouldn't be able to add the aftermarket defroster. Maybe that's just as well since these vehicles are getting too old and fragile to drive around in weather that requires a defroster ;o(
