Does anyone know how to get the lighter housing off the face plate. I am afraid of breaking this thing off.

I assume you mean the aluminum housing??
It should unscrew. Mine did on my '78.

I guess I should clearify this.
I stuck my finger in the front side of the housing, holding the radio faceplate/housing, while unscrewing the backside of the lighter housing..........hope thats clear enough.
