i have a 1984 elky conquista with the 305. i want to get a set of headers that will make my car sound nice and throaty but don't want to get pulled over constantly for being too loud. .............oh yeah........... i have an incredible tendency to gripe when i have to spend lots of money.

I like the fit of my hedman full lengths on my '78. They were around 100 bucks. But they wont change how ur car sounds much....look into mufflers and duel exhaust if ur interested in that.

edelbrock make headers for G bodies that come with a Y pipe, and you wouldn't have to get a custom pipe made, or have to dual it out

Although headers will slightly increase engine sound, the sound generally increases in the engine compartment, not at the exhaust, and is only minimal. The type of muffler you have is what will effect the sound of your engine more than anything else. Headers are designed to increase performance, but only in conjunction with the rest of the exhaust system. Although Hedman headers will increase performance over most stock manifolds, you will not get the same type of increase if you were to use a quality set of headers such as Hookers. Hedman headers are designed for ease of fit along with a slight performance gain. In order to get the full potential from a set of headers, each pipe must be of equal length, along with the collector being cut to the right length for your particular engine (this is determined by a dyno or trial and error) Hooker headers are equal length tubes, more expensive, and can be a bit harder to install. If your planning on installing headers only to change the sound of your engine only, save your money and put it into the muffler(s).
