I have a '74 Elky and the previous owner removed the A/C compressor, probably because it was bad. the pulley won't turn, but the shaft does turn OK. All the rest of the unit is intact. I have the old compressor, and it is the long cylindrical unit by Frigidaire., I don't kinow the proper terminology for this style. My question is, should I get a rebuilt comp. like this one, or should I get one of the newer smaller ones? Is there a model number that works that I should look for and is there brackets available for the newer style if I should change to the newer one? Thanks for lots of good info from this forum.
Thanks,
BB

The 1974 Elky had a A6 compressor; big, ugly and heavy but considered by many to be the best AC compressor ever made by GM. The newer smaller compressor is the R4. I would keep the A6 compressor; rebuilt units are pretty reasonable and you won't have to get new brackets, hoses and pulleys.
