: Hey Region 7
19ElCamino72 01-18-2006, 11:46 AM Just joined NECOA a few days agao and am still finding my way around the website. Just noticed the region specific forums today. Duh. Anyway, I live in Alabaster which is just south of Birmingham. I have a '72 which i've had for 6 years and now i'm bound and determined to restore it before it rots away.
How many of y'all live in Alabama? And is anybody close to B'ham? Always looking for advice as my elky will need complete restoration.
But mostly I just wanted to drop by and say hi!

Caveman49 01-18-2006, 06:10 PM Hey Glenn, welcome to the site, and Region 7, good to have another Alabama Soul onboard.
I'm south of you in the Enterprise AL area. I'm into 4th Gen Elkys, but would love to buy a 3rd Gen if I were to find one at a good price, and within a reasonable distance from the homesite (2-300miles). I'm always looking and buying cars, especially the older models. I really believe I'm going to officially retire one of these days and do nothing but work on my rides

19ElCamino72 01-18-2006, 11:15 PM Thanks for the welcome. At one time I owned a '73 Sprint. It was a good truck. A little banged up but it ran well. Still I prefer 3rd generation and would prefer a '70 (love the front end) but I live with the '72. Occasionally I think about selling it and holding out for what I want but i'd never get anywhere close to what I have in it (about $4k).
Anyway, i've decided to attempt restoration. Tired of looking at it as it sits. Wish I had a garage but Spring's coming so maybe I can get started when the weather gets better.
Doesn't look like a whole lot of folks live in our area. Seems strange considering all the redneck jokes about ElCaminos and gun racks but what do I know?
Anyway, thanks again. I'm sure we'll talk more often.

I'm the 4th owner of my 85 and I learned that the first owner drove to another man's house with a shotgun in the back and, you guessed it, shot him dead! 8O 8O
He then turned the car in to the financing bank and told them he wouldn't need it where he was going.
The 2nd owner filled me in on that piece of history, I'm ashamed to say. But no gunrack, though.
Elky-holic 07-10-2006, 07:19 AM Scott...I know EDDZACHARY what you mean! Husband had gone to the Gulf fishing and wanted me to take our son to check out a '74 SS he had found in the Mule Trader (local swap mag). We called and a lady was selling it. Got to Clanton on a Friday afternoon and went outside to check it out. It fired right up. Sounded beautiful. The lady said the only thing it needed was body work to repair the bullet hole, and the passenger side seat needed reupholstering because the cops had destroyed it collecting evidence...as her husband was shot and killed IN THE 'MINO  ! I KNOW my eyes got as big as saucers and I tried to get the kid outta there as soon as possible. He LOVED the truck :? . I FINALLY got him in our car and told him he BETTER NOT think he was getting that el camino. He asked why and I told him he didn't know WHO would be riding "shotgun" with him. He radioed his dad to tell him the story and they both just fell out laughing. Wish HE coulda been there!
19ElCamino72 07-10-2006, 12:31 PM So, how much was that Elky?
Elky-holic 07-10-2006, 12:47 PM :P HAHAHAHA!! Glenn, at the time she was asking $7000 and wouldn't budge on the price!! I wouldn't have driven it to a cat fight! It needed an all new interior, new paint, body work (rust rust rust). She did carry a baseball bat behind the seat. She said it was for protection..."a single woman driving around a classic vehicle..you know how it is". 8O Even if she sold it for $10 I'd have to think long and hard about buying it just 'cuz of the story! LOL!!
19ElCamino72 07-10-2006, 01:35 PM 7 GRAND??????????????????? Holy Crap! It's not like it used to belong to Bonnie & Clyde! Well, as I always say in my business, stupid people give me a reason to exist.
So, y'all trying to build a stable of Elkys or what? Haven't been through Saginaw in a while. Is that late 4th gen still there? I know when I was driving back and forth to Montgomery everyday for the ex-gov's corruption trial, I kept seeing a red 5th gen just off the interstate just north of exit 208.
Anyway, have a good day. Talk at cha later//Glenn
Elky-holic 07-10-2006, 01:46 PM That's what I said!!! Maybe she thought it was worth more since her husband's DNA was in it. (I'm SO bad!) And we looked at this one before finding the 5th gen.
The one in Saginaw is still there. Been thinking of putting one of Drew's cards on it...just don't wanna get shot or bit! And I have noticed 3 El Camino's and one Calblablablabla in Calera the last month.
Oh! And get this....our neighbor sold his Calblablablabla for $20,000 last week. GIVE ME A BREAK!!!! I think the dude who bought it fell and bumped his head!!! And the neighbor called wanting to know if we were selling our house. His granddaughter (Andrea's sis-in-law) wants it and that way he won't have to build his daughter and son-in-law a house. But we have a year to find some property and build a house. How nice of him!
Ciao! Mel
ksmmspt 07-10-2006, 05:12 PM Elkyholic: That story topped mine. I would probably ditch the car if I knew someone died in it from something other than natural causes. Sounds like she should have been asking $700 instead of $7K. Very interesting story, though. Thanks for sharing.
