Here is my review of the Dynomax Headers 86121 for the 78-87 Chevrolet El Camino.

Car: 1979 Chevrolet El Camino

Motor: GM Performance Parts ZZ3 345 H.P. Crate Motor with "D" shaped exhaust ports

Transmission: 200 4R

Installation: The headers went in surprisingly well. The Passenger side Header went in from the bottom very easily and cleared everything. No denting or dimpling necessary. The driver's side header required that the oil filter be removed, the firewall needed to be banged a little where the metals join together, and the shift linkage rod needed to be bent to clear one of the header tubes. The header went in from the bottom as well. Other than that the header went up into place and clear everything else.

Performance: Hard to say because I installed true dual exhaust at the same time. There is a difference but I cannot say it was the headers or it was the exhaust. They both complement each other.

Gaskets: I used Fel-Pro Header Gasket 1470

Overall I am happy with this product.

Are these long-tubes? I've seen two versions when I looked them up online. I really want to switch over to long-tubes when I redo my exhaust later this year and switch to true-dual.

Any suggestion on mufflers? I'm going to put cats back on and I've always used Flowmasters on my Mustangs, so I'd like to go with them. But, since I've got a Mustang, I always had an enmormous dedicated aftermarket with tons of custom parts so finding the correct stuff has been easy. Not so much with the 5th gen ElC.

I've got these on my 84 with a 350 vortec H.O.
They went in well, although I was doing a complete engine swap so it made it easy.
I do have a problem with the shifter arm banging against the driver side tubes though.
How did you bend the shifter linkage?
Got any pics?

Thanks!

I have the same headers on mine (without the ceramic coating) and don't have any problems with my shift linkage on a TH350.

Yeah I know what you mean, but I was hoping to get some more people involved by dragging it to the front without just starting a new thread and clogging up the forums.

Good tip though.

My last set of headers was from Summit Racing ('74 Chevelle, Elco without a box) and they are ceramic coated. The price was great, 178 bucks. Couldn't believe it after seeing some for big bucks. That was last summer.
