The elky was sitting in for about three years befor I got it and It was retainging oil in the heads. So I was wondering how to flush out all the old oil in my engine with out pulling the heads and intake off If not exactly what I will need to do.

YOU MAY WANT TO TAKE THE VALVE COVERS OFF AND SEE IF ITS SLUDGE BUILDUP, IF SO THERE IS A LOT OF CLEANING INVOLVED. IF NOT, SOME PARTS STORE SELL A CAN (MOTOR FLUSH) tHAT YOU ADD TO YOUR OIL . VERY SIMPLE TO USE. YOU MAY WANT TO FLUSH A COUPLE OF TIMES.

If it has any substantial amount of build up their is no cleaner on the market that will flush an engine, even when you take the valve covers off and try to remove the sludge it usually taks a scraper and sometimes a chisel.

You can clean the return holes in the heads so the oil will return better but that is the best you can ask for whithout rebuilding.

Don't waste your money on a flush it does very little.

A grease monkey told me once that kerosene does the same job.

8) I've used diesel fuel before, I've seen others use k-1 and some would even run the engine for a couple of minutes (not me, I disconnected the power and cranked it over with the plugs out). Before I did this I cleaned out the heads of all the sludge, then set the valve covers back in place cranked it over a few times then ran passage brushes through the returns, repeated crahking over a few more times, drained the pan(let it drain over night, New oil and filter and another oil change after about 300 miles.

Using an engine flush on an old gunked up engine is very very risky. Best thing is to clear oil drain holes in heads with a heavy wire and then do several oil changes in a row driving the car a short distance between each change.

Cleaning under the valve covers is fairly easy and will tell you allot.

If you want to go a litle deeper with the cleanup, you can R&R the intake manifold and clean the bottom of the manifold and the lifter valley too. In the past I've found a lot of sludge there. It'll probably add 3-4 hours to your cleanup effort, depending on wiring, hoses and how hard the manifold is to get on/off.

In general though I personally stay away from chemical flushout or scraping the sludge out until engine rebuild time. I feel doing so is a little too risky to the engine because any chunky stuff can get caught in and plug up the oil pump pickup, starving the engine of oil.

Because you can't get all the gunk out until a rebuild anyway, and after I was sure the oil was draining well down from/through the heads, I'd opt for a routine of regular oil and filter changes.

I have to get it running by this weekend so I guess I'll try and clean out the return passages and very regular oil changes. and I am want to buildup a 350 or 383 for it.
