my 60 el camino- status getting painted and ulphostered
Hi all,
I've done my homework and understand that I need to have my anodized aluminum parts de-anodized to get the best effect before I polish them. De-anodized is very cheap the shop I've found will chage bulk $40 for everything of my 60 el camino. The grille, bezels, the side plane and one piece moulding connected to it and my tailights bezels are about the only aluminum on the 60. My question is then has anyone actually polished aluminum afters its been deanodized? Is it as easy to polish as stainless of course once its been de-anodized? The stainless is relatively easy with a grinder wheel I picked up at Harbor Freight. I've never polished and it was fairly easy to do. But if polish9ing aluminum is very hard I just my have to pay someonel else. my understaning is alumunium can be polished using tripoli once its been de-anodized. Am I getting over my head trying to polish never having done so before?

Yes, once the anonization is removed you can polish the aluminum trim and the effect looks great. Of course you loose the protection of the anonization but it is well worth it because because of the dramatic difference in appearance. In my experience polishing old aluminum trim is no more difficult than polishing old SS trim.

Yes, standard equipment too. Some '96 and all '97 and '98 Marks VIII had HIDs. They were the first production car to have HIDs, before the Europeans and Japanese.

All this discussion on trim is super! Is the trim on my 79 GMC Caballero anodized alum.? The trim is pretty dull and since I am going to repaint the truck I will be removing it. Is restoring the finish worth doing it yourself or is there a company that will do it for a reasonable fee? If the cost is high doing it yourself makes sense but if the cost to restore the finish isn't too bad I would rather be doing some work on another pricier project.

:) :) I started polishing my aluminum parts this weekend and the difference is awesome. I started of with the tripoli to cut and then finished with the white rouge... boy the shiny finish makes me want to have the dings on the parts removed...but I know that can get really expensive and I plan to make my 1960 el camino a driver only.
