I can't speak authoritatively, but the 1st place I'd look is on the block just rear of the motor mounts.

On my 86 Camino it is on the passenger side of the engine block. It is real close to the starter. There should be a single wire running to it. If you replace it be ready with the new sensor. Do it on a cold engine. The antifreeze will start running out as soon as you remove it. Just screw the replacement in quickly.

I have a 350 w/tuned port injection in another car, and it has a knock sensor (so I know where to look). I have looked under the 305 in my 1986 elky, and did not see one. I do not think we have them.

My 86 Camino has the original 305 engine. I know for sure I have a factory knock sensor because I have replaced it. That was over 10 years ago but I did replace it. It did not make much difference, but it is still on there. The factory repair manual discusses the knock sensor as well.

That's great! I will look again, and study my factory manual.
I am planning a trip to lower BAJA Calif this summer, and it will be nice not to worry about low octane gas. I hope your recollection is right.

Well, I found it. Mr86Camino was correct, it was on the lower passenger side of the block just ahead of the starter. The control it feeds is on top of the passenger side wheel well.
Now I can drive with questionable octane gas (read lower Baja) with confidence!

I would not trust just the knock sensor to protect my engine.

I would suggest that you bring a timing light with you. When the bad gas is the only option I would retard the timing a couple of degrees.

I converted my engine to throttle body injection a while back so my engine is no longer pure stock. Even when the engine was stock I heard the engine knocking, and the knock sensor did not seem to do much. Just back off the throttle and take it easy.

If you have a lot of miles on the engine you might try to remove some carbon from the combustion chamber. That is what fixed my knock problem. Follow the directions on a can of SeaFoam. Pour it into the intake real slow! It will make a huge cloud of smoke, so don't do it in the garage!

Have a fun and safe trip.
