So, I've had a couple people look at my engine since I've gotten my '86 Elky Conquista, and all have said it's not a 305. Most believe it to be an Olds 307. I have yet to get under the car to pull the numbers from the block. I just had a tranny guy check out my tranny today and he got under it and said the tranny was not a 700R4, it's a 200R4.

So, my question is...

The people I bought the car from said it's the original engine and transmission since they owned it in the early 90's. (They were the 2nd owners.)

I'd heard a rumor that GMC had a little issue in the late 80's with using Olds parts on their cars. Is it at all possible this Elky came with an Olds 307 and 200R4, or was this most likely something the original owner had stuck in. I wouldn't see why they would swap that from the original. Title and carfax came back clean... VIN reports 305.

Any ideas?

Olds engines were never factory installed in 5th Gen Elkys. The OEM trans would be a TH200R4 as the TH7004R was never installed in a 5th Gen Elky. All that being said who knows what mods have been made to a 20 year old vehicle.

1. Take a pic of the engine and post it here if you can. 2. I don't think a 200R4 can bolt up to a 307 Olds. You'd need a BOP trans and I don't think GM ever made a BOP 200R4 3. Quit letting people (that don't know their butt from a hole in the ground) looking under your hood! 4. Maybe I'm wrong on number 2...but I don't think so!

8) The only thing I remember as for conroversy was complaints about Oldsmobiles with Chevy engines and transmissions. I'm not real sure about it now but it seemed the cars were Canadian built. :?

Yeah, if I remember right a bunch of Olds owners brought a class action lawsuit against GM when they found out that their Oldsmobiles had Chevy engines in them. I don't remember the outcome of the lawsuit.

Ok, that might be it. Olds with Chevy, not Chevy with Olds.

At any rate, I'm curious to pull the numbers from the block to make sure. We have emissions out here in CO, and this engine does not have a smog pump, nor is there any mounting place to bolt one up... That was one of the 1st things that popped out. Any 305 I've seen has mountings for a smog pump.

I'll have to do some digging and make sure. Will a 200R4 tranny mount to a 305? I'm not familiar.

If there's accessory holes drilled in those heads than there's a way to mount an air injection pump. Now I've gotta wonder what you've got under there...if the previous owner said it's the original motor and trans, there should be an air injection pump with all the plumping unless it's been removed or it's not the original engine.

Nope, no holes to even mount a bracket and no accessories on it that would suggest one was there, or that one could even be put on it. That's where my 1st concern came in as to what engine was in it. That's why I was a bit concerned beings that I didn't want to spend the money to have one custom installed if CO required it. I took it to emissions, they popped the hood, took a look, didn't say a word, and she passed with flying colors.

The TH200-4R has a universal bolt pattern, will bolt up to a chevy and a BOP/Caddy. GM used it in all of the G-body cars with overdrive, Cultlass/GNX/T-type/Monte/Regal/El Camino.

See I was wrong on number 2. I forgot all about those V6 motors. Maybe there is a 307 Olds in there...but if it is, it's not the original motor like the previous owner said it is.

Is the oil fill cap on the valve cover or does it stick up in the front of the engine?

Right valve cover, at the back, looking into the bay.

Then it's not an oldsmobile engine.

I was actually doing research on Chevy exhaust manifolds and found this by accident. It should answer all your questions about your engine.
