A friend of mine wants me to replace the outer window felt/rubber on his 84 Elky.

Its been a few years since I did this to my own 82 and don't remember where I bought them.

Are they still availble from GM?

Are aftermarket repops just as good and if so where do you recommend we get them?

As I recall, you simply pop off the old ones and snap the new ones on with the clips that are on the piece itself, correct?

Thanks for your feedback.

1. Lower the window fully
2. Remove the upper and lower door panels
3. Remove the three 10 mm nuts holding the window to the register
4. Remove window from register and lower the window to the bottom of the door.
5. Remove the 4-5 screws attaching the window felt trim to the door skin
6. Replace the window felt
7. Reinstall the 4-5 screws attaching the window felt trim to the door skin
8. Reattach the window to the register with the three 10 mm nuts
9. Reinstall the door panels.

Estimated time: ~1 hour per door

Why did you have to take the window apart... maybe mine was different did it with the window all the way down. One screw was a little hard to get but not a big problem. The fent on the inside was a little harder it was stapled to a metal piece, had to pry the old staples out. maybe they are not all the same...

Two of the middle screws for the felt are a PITA to get at with the window in. I recently replaced the passenger side window felt in my 86 MCSS and had to remove the window to get at the two center screws. I replaced one in a friends 82 MC a few weeks ago and had to do the same thing. I guess maybe it depends on how the window is adjusted.

On my 76 I should have removed the window for the reason 87ElCamino mentioned. Removing the screws was a PITA but putting them back in was even harder. I pop rivited the ones inside.

The felts are available from lots of places. EC Parts, The El Camino Store and probably GM. My 76 Felts were original GM parts not repop so if they have them for my 76, which is next to impossible to find new parts for, they would definatly have them for an 87 model.

It would be a good time to clean the window tracks and add new grease to the rollers and tracks and regulators.

Thanks guys, for the help.

I was thinking these had clips on them but after thinking about it again I remember the ones with clips were on a 67 Chevelle I once had that I replaced the window felts on.

I am in the process of installing new window felts on my 81 elky. The inside felt was attached to the upper door panel via heavy staples. I have pryed the staples out and am now ready to install the new felt. Not having a heavy duty staple machine, how is the new felt reattached. Help please.

My gen 3 were stappled and there was enough room to bend and crimp over the stapples with no probelm. They are tuff but if you attach it correctly they do work and our correct. Som years have crews and or can be installed with either method.

Are you saying that you used the old staples to attach the new felt? I was thinking maybe using a pop rivit but have not tried either yet. Maybe some more of you guys ccould share your expirence with me.
Thanks Jim

I used Pop Rivits in mine. The outter felt on the 4th generation Elky has tiny screws that hold that on and they are difficult to put back or to get off for that matter.

Good Luck

My '86 had staples as well. Not having a staple gun either, I drilled pilot holes, and then attached with 5 small sheet metal screws. Worked just fine, and the next time the felt has to be replaced, it will be much easier.

Sounds like sheet metal screws are the way to go over the pop rivits. I can't imagine how hard it would be trying to get those little staples back in. I'm going out to find some small SS screws. Thanks Jim

BTW, I used the screws on the inner felts that are mounted on the door panels. The outer felts that mount to the door already have screws from the factory, and yes they are a b!tch to remove/install. I was able to remove those without removing my window by making a tool for the job. I took a small screwdriver and bent the tip at a 90 degree angle so I could reach behind the glass and remove the screw. The screwdriver was magnetized, so as not to lose the screw in the door.

What size sheet metal screws did you use/recommend for the inside panel?

Hmm, well I'll have to go home and look at the box. Can't remember specifically, it was something that I had on hand in my shop. You definitely want to go with as short as you can. Assuming your panel on your '81 is similar in contruction to my '86, the top part of the door panel (the part that is curved) is sheet metal. Just make sure the screw you use is long enough to penetrate, but not so long it protrudes out the back side more than 1/16 to 1/8". I used a phillips head sheet metal screw and pre-drilled the holes so that the screw wouldn't wander when I was driving it. You need to hold the felt down tightly in the position you want it when drilling, so that your felt and the trim sits down on the top of the panel without any ugly gaps.

I just finished with the drivers side and it turned out great. I used six number 6X1/4" Phillips head sheet metal screws. I predrilled each hole holding the felt firmly against the door panel. Looks just like the original. The outside felt was fastened to the door with small screws. I was able to get at all of them with the window all the way down. Now to get at the other side. Thanks guys for all of your help. Jim

yes, will work on your 87.

I reused the heavy staples on mine, after drilling new holes for them with a pin vise. slow and a PITA, but worked great and looks stock.
