Welcome on board! :D

It could be the switch has gone bad- What year elky is it on? What kind of tranny? Collumn or Console shifter?

If its a collumn shift car there is a moon shaped switch down near the base where it meets the firewall(under the dash) it should have several plugs goinginto it- one for the neutral safty switch, one for the back up lights- That would be a good place to start...

If its a floor shift car- the switch would be somewhere on the floor shifter, probably under the console. Manual tranny cars- i have no clue...

Another thought... Does the car have a trailer hitch on it? Or did it have one in the past? Often times when they get installed, they hack into the rear wiring harness to connect a trailer light connector. Usually(at least on my cars) it has been a poor job with crimp connectors, electrical tape- etc... You might crawl under the back of the car and see if any of the wires look like they have been hacked for this... maybe as simple as cutting & re-splicing the cables at the previous poor connections.

Hope this at least gets you going... Hopefully someone else can chime in with some help too!

Hey, thanks for the reply and help, it is a 1976 gmc sprint(same as el camino), it has a column shift, with 350 engine and 350 tran. it did have a trailer hitch before, but removed some of it to get the new bumper on, and i remember it had a wireing harness with a connector thing that was for the trailer but cut all that off.. ive checked the wiring before and i didnt see any tears but most are taped up. I am going to look around for the switch now.... thanks for the help

mine used to do that, but it fixed itself somehow :? . I used to have to move the lever around in reverse to get them to come on.

That's the way mine is now ('84 column shift 350), but there's a floor shift in the near future.
