: Diesel Swap
72 El Camino 05-28-2006, 10:41 AM Ok so Ive been tinkerign around with the idea of putting a LBZ (06+) Duramax 6.6 into my camino. The car is slowly undergoing a complete frame off resto and most likely will become a trailer queen/show car. I love everythign about diesels and after hours of searching I have yet to find anyone swap one of these into a muscle car. When I first got the car I loved it, but realizing it now its just like every other el camino out there, red with black stripes. When I repaint it Im going to go with electron blue (corvette z06 blue) with silver or black stripes, and custom painted SS emblems. I mainly just made this post to let people know where the car is headed. I dont really want to hear about how I should build the SBC or swap in a BBC becuase all those swaps have been done a million times. If I build this car the way Im plannign on it, its gonna be unlike any other which I feel is a better reward than having a typical run of the mill car with a swapped in 454...
G-Body 05-29-2006, 09:25 PM So swap in a LS1, I haven`t seen many 72`s with LSx`s in them :P , well mabey I`m a little biased. But I think a diesel would be cool. I just don`t know how much they weigh, I know most of them are pretty heavy. You will also be in uncharted territory as far as oil pans, mounts, exhaust manifolds, and accessory brackets, but I say go for it.
LeoC2 05-30-2006, 07:30 AM Absolutely go for it, and at the same time add this (http://www.greasecar.com/kit_detail.cfm?prodID=23) to really make it unique.
72 El Camino 05-30-2006, 11:23 AM but what would a showcar be without a custom fabrication?
Poltergeist 05-30-2006, 07:49 PM I wonder about the weight and if it would even fit.
Also what are you going to do for traction? Those things make monster power. http://www.poltergeist.us/images/drive.gif
If you do wind up going this route definetly post your progress. Interesting is a vast understatement for a swap like this.
72 El Camino 05-31-2006, 01:00 AM Im pretty sure it would fit. It would be a tight squeeze for sure and will probably require alot of work but I think it can be done. As far as traction, fully built 12 bolt or maybe even all out 9'' ear end, an amazing suspension, and some traction bars
stangkiller 02-16-2007, 01:11 PM well, since you said itll be a showcar, mid mount the engine  that would be sweet as hell... get a perfect 50/50 weight balance, cus diesel engines weigh like 1000+ pounds so mounting it on the front is gonna mean no traction at all.
72 El Camino 02-17-2007, 11:32 AM actually decided to do an LS6 swap, should be startin here soon
ElkyPete 02-17-2007, 12:27 PM Well the good part is actually one more Elky coming to life once again!
LS6 is a nice little engine. If you'd done the other you could have put in a GM 14 bolt rear, nothing will tear that sucker up not even a diesel. Since your going to be using an ECM anyway you may consider putting in the 4L65e behind it.That is the upgraded GM Automatic OD. It is way stronger than the 4L60/700R4 and about as strong as the 4L80e but lighter and better geared. If you go with an automatic anyway.
72 El Camino 02-17-2007, 12:39 PM if i went auto itd be a 6speed auto outta the vettes, plannin on doin T56, hopefully outta a cts-v
ElkyPete 02-17-2007, 01:00 PM I got an old beat up 72 Elky I'll be getting to when the 80 is done. I had planned a BBC with a T56 viper tranny. I like the idea of having two overdrive gears and a good solid 1-4 gear ratio for racing. Its like having two transmission. There is a company that makes the kit, last I saw they wanted 2200 for it. Who knows what it will be when I finally get around to worrying about mine.
I'd like to start on it next year but I'll need to get the other done first. By the way, that paint job on the picture under your sig, it looks outstanding!
DieselBurps 04-09-2007, 07:52 PM I guess with an LS6 under the hood, the wife can still take it out for groceries and you won't be as concerned about letting Jr take it out on the weekends... It should get out of it's own way if you push the pedal down far enough! The bombed Duramax with an Allison behind it would be a pretty awesome thing though. That much torque might be scary though!
It's funny how the "big, bad factory motors" seem so tame compared to a beefed diesel nowadays. It may be tough to keep 1000 lb-ft on the ground without 4wd. The gas crowd hasn't caught up to that notion yet, but maybe they don't get out much...
