Hey People,

I have recently ran upon a 1966 Custom El Camino with weeds up to the door handle. It has been wrecked and the front end is missing. The body is not a total loss though. The interior is bad, but can be replaced. It is sporting a 396 which the owner claims to be the original. It is red inside and out. I would like to know something about the car. The fire wall body tag is as follows:

The frame on the passenger side is bent slightly behind the front wheel. I think it would be a possible restoration project, but I don't know if it is worth it. Where is the Vin number on the 66 models?

Since there were only 1,865- 1966 elcaminos built with the 396 engine they are kinda rare. I have one of them and just finished parting out a very rusted 66, 396 -4 spd, AC elcamino. As for restoring one that is rough, You would probably have much more money in it than it is worth. The market for elcaminos is limited to people like here on this site. While I like them, they do not command the price of a 66 Super Sport even with all the equipment that a SS would have. My 66 is loaded, but would not even come close to what a 66 loaded SS would bring. :mad:

I forgot :oops: The vin is on the left door post about middle way up. A small rectangle shape stainless tag.

Thanks for the information! I have found the Vin Number right where you said it would be. I took some pictures of the vehicle, but the owner refuses to sell it with the 396. The body is so rough that I finally came to my senses and filed it as a Hall of Shame Item. I feel that unless it came with the original engine the rest of the body is useless. Thanks for the information again. Do you have a picture of your 66? I would like to see it. Also, is there a el camino registry anywhere? I can't find one on the net anywhere. Does ECC have a registry?
