Can anyone give me a heads up on removing the fuel tank from my 68 custom/ The manual say's to remove filler neck. This one seems welded in place. Thanks jimmy

There isn't a rubber section on the filler neck? I don't know about '68's but my '67 has a rubber hose held on with clamps.

It must be an aftermarket or replacement tank because, no, there is not a rubber part. It is a one piece tank. With the filler neck being metal and attached to the tank via weld. Don't know how someone got the SOB in there.

I HAVE A 1970 EL CAMINO THAT HAS ALOT OF SLUDGE IN TANK AND GETTING UP INTO FUEL LINES ETC. . SO WILL HAVE TO GET THAT CLEANED OUT. ANY SUGGESTIONS AS TO HOW THIS SHOULD BE DONE?
DO I NEED TO REPLACE THE TANK OR CAN IT BE CLEANED OUT SOMEHOW? YES I`M A FEMALE BUT LOVE THIS CAR AND WANT IT TO BE AS MINT AS IT CAN BE. NEXT IS THE DASH TO BE REDONE AND CAR WILL BE JUST ABOUT WHERE I WANT IT. BUT RUNNING WITHOUT FOULING UP IS THE FIRST ORDER OF BUSINESS. SHE IS RED WITH BLACK STRIPES AND HAS A SWEET 427 IN HER. JUST HAD NEW CERAMIC HEADERS PUT ON AND 3" EXHAUST ON THE DUELS. SOUNDS AWESOME FOR SURE. MAY EVEN GET IN SOME RUNS WITH HER THIS YEAR. THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.

Why not just have a new gas tank installed? I'm not sure how much a 70 tank would cost but a replacement for my 87, with the straps, is under $200. You may be able to reuse the sending unit too.

Welcome to ECC. It's nice to see another El Camino owner from Roe Dyland in the forums. :D

The gas tank and filler neck is one piece on the 68-72. Prior to removal, the battery should be disconnected and any fuel should be emptied from the tank. To remove it requires disconnecting the fuel lines and wire to the sending unit. Before unbolting the straps underneath, don't forget there is also a metal tab near the top of the filler neck which has a small bolt holding it to the body (open the gas filler door to access it). Once the tank is removed you can take it usually to a radiator repair shop to have it flushed out. Even though the tank is empty, there are still FUMES which are very combustible. Caution should be used when transporting the tank. If it is rusted out, you can order a replacement (from Year One, Classic Industries, etc). I think the repro tank comes without a filler neck so you'll have to have a PROFESSIONAL weld the old one to the new tank ( gas tank + welding torch = DANGEROUS , don't try this at home).
New straps should be used when reinstalling the tank.
Hope this info helps.

[B]CHEVY DUDE HAD IT RIGHT,ALWAYS USE A RADIATOR SHOP.I'VE NEVER WORKED @ ONE + I'M NOT ADVERTISING,THEY ARE PROFESSIONALS.ALSO-THIS IS A REAL GOOD TIME TO REPLACE YOUR FUEL SENDING UNIT + THE INSULATORS ON THE MOUNTING STRAPS.
