Hello, I'm brand new to this site. I have a possible opportunity to buy a '78 Elky that is a 4-speed.

I'm wondering first if it was originally a 4-speed....... how can I tell? VIN?

Secondly, I'm wondering how rare the 4-speed was in '78

Thirdly, it has a muncie in it now (I'm assuming not orginal). My friend told me that the 4-spds were saginaws.... what model saginaw should be in it?

Need a little more infomation about the car.

What it the VIN? The engine is coded in the VIN.

What is the engine suffix code and VIN number on the engine (determine if original and that will mention trans type)

Do you have any original paperwork for the car, need that info

Whats on the body tag. Need that.

Also, the VIN derivative was stamped on all Trans as the assembly plant, find that and match the last 6 digits with your vin and you will know if you have the original trans.
