My 200-4R under light acceleration shifts from 1-2 late and harsh, and shifts from 2-3 late also. If I punch it, it shifts too soon and slow. I've tried adjusting the TV cable in many different positions, still acts the same. It also has no passing gear. Once it shifts into 3rd or 4th, you're stuck there unless you manually down shift it. Do you think I need to overhaul it, or maybe try a shift correction kit?

Replace it with a T350 or a 700R4. These were evil bad transmissions. I did many 350 sways in old S10s

From everything I have read on El Camino Central about the 2004R it is the transmission of choice. If built properly it can handle lots of HP. With 4 speeds and a lockup converter it is far superior to a T350. Now we will all agree the T200 is a weenie transmission.

In the next few weeks I will be swapping my current T-350 for a 2004R. The 2004R is complicated and from what I read the TV cable adjustment is critical.

If Your Camino came with a 2004R keep it!

Adjust your TV cable EXACTLY how the CSM tells you to. If you get it too far off, you'll burn up the tranny since the TV valve actually controls the pressure of the hydraulic fluid within the tranny. DON'T monkey with it, like you would with your ignition timing. Once it's adjusted EXACTLY like the book says, you can make VERY SMALL adjustments to fine-tune it but don't go grossly away from that correct setting.

I can do lots of mechanical stuff but automatic transmissions are something I stay far away from. I have a 200-4R in mine also and I had a local racing transmission shop fine tune it and install a shift kit. I can tell you... they made an awsome difference and it was not expensive. I'd say go find a reputable tranny expert and have them do the adjustments.

Even though the early TH2004R had some problems there is no reason to replace it with a TH700R4 which is a very similar trans. Both trans can be built to withstand large amounts of torque and be very reliable. I think you should have a performance rebuild done.

Early 700R4s had el mucho problems, too; for some reason, nobody seems to rember them. I rember waiting in the service line at a Chevy dealership once back around '84 or '85 or something and seeing a new-looking Crapice wagon limping into the shop. The service manager hung up the phone, turned around, saw the car, tossed his hands in the air and moaned "Oh no, not AGAIN!!". After he'd calmed down, I asked what he meant and he said that wagon had already had two replacement 700R4s installed after two rebuilds of its original tranny had failed. It apparently had more or less lived at that dealership in critical condition for some months, in the ICU suite, so to speak :(

yeah both the early th2004r and the th700r4 used the same front pump with seven vanes---most of those problems were fixed in 86/87 with the 10 vane pump and there were also several other improvements as time went by, by 87 it was pretty good............Dan
