Any help here is appreciated. My grandfather just gave me his '75 elcamino SS. He lives in OK - I live here in PA. I just tried to transfer the title to PA but apparently PA requires that "trucks" have a formal laden weight stamped on the door latch sticker. My 75 has a GVWR & GAWR but no laden weight.
Has anyone else ran into this problem??

Maybe you could argue with the DMV that it's not a truck but a car since it shares chassis and running gear with a car (in my case my '81 is essentially a Malibu with a really big open trunk). I've been told that the state of Florida considers an El Camino a car..

Believe me - I tried. But the current OK title shows "PK" as body type which didn't help my cause. Plus - this tag agent told me it's well known that an el camino is the same as a malibu, chevelle, etc but since it has a truck bed it's a truck. Oh well, to solve the issue i'm having it put on a truckstop scale that's nationally certified, if that isn't acceptable to them then i'm afraid i'll have to drum up some tears and cry for effect... :-)

Just in case anyone is interested - it was 3980lbs on the certified scale and PennDot accepted that

Glad you resolved it. I've always maintained that there's no intelligent life in Tallahassee (our state capital). Guess the same holds true with most seats of government. Mine's actually a GMC Caballero which I guess would really set off the Pa. DMV... GMC doesn't make cars, after all. Oh well, I guess I should count my blessings that at least for now, Fla. govt. types can be pretty laid back sometimes. (Don't ask me about the horse trailer from hell that I've been trying to title for about two years now.)

What really ticks me off here in PA is that we have to pay the truck plate fee which is like $25 a year more. Its probably the same in some other states too. Anyway I am going to classic or antique plates as soon as I get it painted to do away with emission checks.

You may want to check on the classic/antique plate rules first. If I read it right you not allowed to use a car with a classic/antique plate as a daily driver. Only for shows and no more than one day a week. Then if you want a real shocker, read what Penn DOT has to say about what requires you to get a "Modified Vehicle". My guess is 99% of these tunner cars are illeagal!

The key to use of antique/classic plates in PA is to have at least one 'regular' registered car in your name, and secondarily NOT to drive the car day in, day out to work and park in the same spot. The main point, tho, is to have that beater on record.
I have only heard of one instance where an antique got its plate lifted by the cops, and the owner eventually found out he got nailed because that was the only car he had registered....

Yeah I only drive my El Camino once, maybe twice a week. Now that its being used only as an ATV hauler so I might have to keep the truck plate on it. Oh well still less than 5000 miles a year so emissions exempt.

I'm trying to find out if a vehicle that is titled as "Modified" needs to have the emission inspection. If they are exempt, this may be a loop hole.
